Re: Max Unger Retires !

I wonder if they asked him to take a pay cut and/or to work with a specialist of his issues snapping the ball to Brees poorly and causing fumbles lately, and he took offense and hung them up. Or maybe they wanted him to restructure his contract and in the process it was clear they were not comfortable with a long extension so he felt less valued. I am not sure this is the buggest loss but it does show why maybe you dont blow all your future draft picks on trading up, long term projects, and backup qb when you need to win now. Most teams could deal with this loss better but most teams have more cap money and draft picks to make something happen.

Well I hope we find someone because as it stands we are a worse team than we were last year. Our line play was a major issue late in the season. We needed all of them to come back healthy and Armstead will be his usual 8 game self. I would feel a lot better if we had gotten Tate.

The FO had to know this was coming. I hope a trade is in the works.

Or far more likely he decided, along with his family, that he was already financially set for life and there was no reason to continue playing. Unger is a very intelligent man and is quite aware of what can happen to your body over time while playing offensive line in the NFL. More and more players have been taking an early exit and I don't blame them.

Easton slides into Unger's spot problem solved. We need a couple of quality backups in the draft

Easton's not filling Unger's shoes - we need better at Center...

Easton at best, factoring health issues, is a sixth man...

6M$/year is quite a lot for a 6th man with pretty bad medical history.

Again, I follow the Vikes fairly closely, and Easton has never really impressed me.

I think he is. I think the Saints knew about Unger. Why else would they pay 24 million for this guy.

If Easton's not the man in the middle for 2019, where do you go?

Tom or possibly Clapp?

+1.

According to beat writer LHolder, Saints staff was aware of Unger's retirement well before the start of Free Agency so they must have felt confident in Easton to become that man in the middle.

Gotta believe Saints coaches/medical staff know what they are doing here.

I'm simply not a believer in Tom at center ...yet.

The NFCCG loss is unraveling this team. We lose Ingram (not that it's a big loss but he was a good decoy) and now we lose an integral piece of the offensive line that was in much need after the 2014 season.

Wow! I see no "unraveling" at all. We make a parallel move at RB and lose a center that had begun to struggle with chronic injury issues. We should still have a top five rated offensive line with whomever mans the middle.

Unraveling? Isn't that a bit extremist?

So we lost everything for that trade. Stephone Anthony was the first round pick we got as pick 31 in2015 and he's gone. Jimmy Graham is long gone, but what if he leaves green bay and Breeze makes him look better than ever? Definitely disappointing but easy to recover from.

Two very deep playoff runs with Max Unger, I wouldn't say we lost everything...

Stephone Anthony had an encouraging defensive rookie of the year run, didn't win, but got strong consideration; then the wheels inexplicably fell off the year two (e.g. D.A., maturity, unknown issues)...

And we kept enough cap money to start adding defensive players - something new for Sean Payton teams...

There's absolutely NO indication that ANY of that stuff is true. Unger said he has been having lower body issues and battling through injuries at the end of the year, so he decided it's time for him to hang it up and walk away. He is a 10 year vet. 10 years is a long run for a lineman. Most don't even last half or a third of that time.

We are the Saints... I am assuming we will see De La Puente or Faine called up for a few snaps.

I trust in Dan Roushar to once again make the Saints offensive line one of the best in the league.

Projected Round (2019): 1-2.
3/16/19: At the NFL Scouting Combine, McCoy was phenomenal with a great workout, a freaky 40 time, and a good round of interviews. McCoy could sneak into the first round, and if slips to Round 2, he should be selected quickly.

McCoy played well for Texas A&M and decided to skip his senior year to enter the 2019 NFL Draft. He could be a plug-and-play starter at guard or center. It would be ideal for him get more powerful, but McCoy has a lot of good tape, including his performances against Clemson and Alabama last year.

McCoy has strong hands and is able to control defenders when he latches on them. He has decent feel and awareness, plus is athletic. McCoy shows a nice ability to hit blocks on the perimeter, at the second level, and in the open field. In the ground game, McCoy is not a powerful pile mover and does not generate a lot of movement in the run game. Hence, he should add more functional strength for the NFL.

8/28/18: McCoy started at guard and center for the Aggies during the 2017 season after being the starter at center during his freshman year. McCoy has good size to him, and his run blocking is ahead of his pass protection. For the NFL, he could fit as a guard or a center.

Bump ...

Good looking out Lee909 :bng: Saints got their guy tonight.
