(merged)BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
By Nick Athan Publisher
Date: Jun 17, 2005 Warpaint Illustrated has learned that wide receiver Az-Zahir Hakim has decided to sign a contract with the New Orleans Saints. The deal could be announced as soon as today. Late this morning Warpaint Illustrated was tipped off that the deal went south. According to our source, Hakim briskly left town and indicated that he would not be coming to Kansas City after contract talks failed to yield a long term deal that he had hoped to get from the Chiefs. Apparently Hakim and his agent hit a snag in those understood contract talks. Both Hakim and his agent left town after the talks broke off with the Chiefs. His agent Bruce Tolner quickly called the Saints and they remained interested in acquiring the former Detroit Lions receiver. This was an unusual change of heart for Hakim who professed his love for the Chiefs organization and Head Coach Dick Vermeil. He clearly wanted to play for them two days ago. But in the NFL money talks and the two sides could not reach an agreement on the terms of the contract. Though Hakim was not expected to be a starter; the team is looking for a veteran receiver to compete for the #3 position. According to our source at Arrowhead, the decision for Hakim to sign with the Saints was the direct result of a conversation between Hakim and Vermeil. Both felt that the Saints would give him a better long term situation then playing just one-year in Kansas City with no guarantees of a long term contract. After that conversation, the Chiefs and Hakim agreed to part ways mutually. With this development, Kansas City might turn its attention back to former Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell or the Seahwaks Koren Robinson. http://chiefs.scout.com/2/388391.html |
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
OMG, this is bizarre news. I hope he isn't coming here for higher pay and definitely not for a long term contract. yuck. I can't believe he even wants to be on the Saints team. I don't have a good feeling about this one. It is better than Freddie Mitchell though, and we probably can't afford Koren Robinson, so as long as we don't do anything absurd with the contract maybe it won't be bad.

Lets sit tight and see if we can get this confirmed through another source... here is the last news on the situation.
http://www.kcchiefs.com/news/2005/06...azzahir_hakim/ long term is cool, means cheaper up front and can his has before he get to expensive. (pathon). |
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
Why am I not excited?
|
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
Its good news... more proven vets at WR. If its true.
|
It's kind of nice--the most important player in Saints history is now a Saint.
Now if we could just get Brian Milne back.... |
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
Yeah - a guy proven to fumble more than Brooks. Can't wait! What a freaking mistake. DOH!
This could push the Beerman off the team, and I don't want to see that. Horn, Stallworth, Henderson, Poole... you really want Hakim??? Over Lewis (a much better special teams player, or Gardner - a bigger middle threat???). I DON'T!!! I mean, IMO, we've got two deep threat speedsters in Henderson and Lewis already. Lewis is a special teams Ace and Henderson is ayoung stud. Why trade a young stud with no hands for an older slower unsure handed WR who, IMO, has serious toughness concerns?? Stupid is as stupid does I guess. |
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
I honestly can't see Hakim to be a major improvement over having Henderson or Poole as our 3rd receiver. Hakim doesn't exactly have the best hands in the world... so why not let Henderson have an oppurtunity to take over that 3rd spot? They are practically the same type of receivers... explosive with questionable hands, except Henderson has more upside.
|
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
Henderson has the oppurtunity... he can win the spot or be the 4th.
|
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
I guess this is the question: If Horn went down and Stallworth moved into WR#1 spot or If Stallworth went down, who would you feel most comfortable being the #2WR??
This is where I think Hakim may have his value and where we lack the appropriate depth. Tallman is questionable as a #3 WR, Henderson has practically seen no playing time, and Poole, while I think he may be our best bet for #3, has not shown anything #2 worthy in the past. I have now changed my mind to this being an ok (best of other options) pickup. I just checked some stats, and Hakim while only putting up around 500 yards over the last few years, has not gone downhill. One last clarification: I am not saying he would be a good #2 WR by any means, but good assurance to have someone move into that spot if needed and Henderson and Poole don't show much. Safety first. |
RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
on the nose... veteran back up. I wouldn't bump stallworth to one if Horn goes down, I'd move Hakim in Horns spot.

Hakim lost 11 fumbles... Brooks is at 19. I am more into this signing as insurance if Horn goes goes down. Thats the only way I like this signing. Not saying he's going to fill his shoes but I'd rather him step in and fill in rather than Stallworth.
|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
I definately rather Stallworth and don't have a problem with us signing a veteran receiver... but Hakim!? :|
|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
I just don't think Stallworths stye is suited to be a go to guy, he isn't a number 1 reciever... sure a 2 and a 3 but number 1... ? give him the speed, down field routes.

RE: hakim really isnt with chiefs anymore
Wow, I guess we have a new third wideout. Was this a good swap, Hakim for Pathon?
|
RE: hakim really isnt with chiefs anymore
yeah..i can see it now..he'll come in here and secure the 3rd spot and even push donte for the 2nd..before long..he'll be the reason for brooks' turn around and be his favorate target since willie jackson..we'll go all the way to the championship game as a result of his playmaking ability..the saints are 1 minute away from going to the superbowl up by three and the opponet is kicking to us..hakim fumbles..they get the ball and score.. and we go home..mark my words..karma has a way with screwing with us..we are the saints

Reading between the lines,
I think they're scared Devery isn't gonna cut it. Haslett even complained to Kenny on WWL that "hell, we aren't even in pads yet and he's missed 3 weeks". He didn't sound happy at all, and the way they throw compliments around this time of year, they must be REALLY worried. They may be scared Devery may be another 2002/2003 era Stallworth. Az is nothing more than Devery insurance. If we end up keeping 6 WR's instead of 5, thats gotta be the reason. I think only 3 TE's will make the team now. |
i didnt know devry was missing time again this year. bad news
|
second year wr... I wouldn't trust em either. It takes 4 year on average for a WR to have a break out. I think its a good call bring in a vet. Think of it this way, if Horn goes down Henderson is the number 2 man!!!!!!!!
|
oh i agree 100% with bringing in a vet but i think lewis is 2nd if horn goes down before devry. but i don't want him to be our 2nd. i like bringing in hakim depending on what we brought him in for. if it is close to what we would have paid to pathon we should have kept jerome. but either way i don't mind bringing in a vet
|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
This is very good news if it is true. We at least know for sure at this point he is not going to the Chiefs.
|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints
yeah anything can happen, he isn't signed yet. I would rather have Pathon myself. but I guess they can't bring him back for less..
|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints

|
RE: Re: RE: BREAKING NEWS: Hakim Headed to Saints

don't know if it's the book, the willingness, the step up, or a combination of all of the above........ to the other henderson......... think jim henderson is having deja vu? smitty |
anybody else have a bad feeling that there is a chance that devery will get cut. i know it is a small possibility, but sumptin is up!!!!
|
i never seen devery play. i mean in college i did but i dont no if he has the nfl potential.
|
what a waste of a second rdr that would be. goes to show you, just have a good senior bowl and combine and scouts overlook weakness like hands and route-running!!!!!

AP reports the Saints are optimistic that they will add free-agent WR Az-Zahir Hakim to the roster after the veteran's deal with the Kansas City Chiefs fell through Friday. The Saints made a contract offer to the seven-year veteran before he agreed to terms with the Chiefs last week. Apparently, Hakim and the Chiefs could not come together on money and playing-time guarantees and decided to part ways. "Az and his agent got together, and they really felt his best situation was not here for him," said Chiefs HC Dick Vermeil, who said the Saints were offering more money and that the Chiefs could not guarantee a roster spot. "I told you all along that I wanted what was best for him, and I think he's going to end up in New Orleans." Details of the Saints' offer are unknown. Hakim's agent, Bruce Tollner, could not be reached for comment. The Saints sent a contract offer to Hakim by overnight Friday, but haven't officially reached an agreement. "I don't have anything confirmed yet, but we'd love to have him," Saints GM Mickey Loomis said.
So I guess he's not quite a Saint yet. |
No just that he was heading to NO. No contracts have been signed so he could still end up anywheres... keep in mind that this could be a negociation tactic Hakim and his agent is using to insure roster spot but seems to be more about money and number of years, from what I am hearing... so ya drop another teams name who might pay more and give him what he wants in hopes another team offers more.
|
I rather give Tai Streets a look.
|
I agree that Henderson maybe on the crappo list for coach and that he may not see the field very much this year either.
|
people are expecting to much from him to early... give him another year or two. It takes time for a WR to develop.
|
I agree E but I think it may take Henderson longer than Stallworth and he is not even all he can be yet.
|
Kick Returners Az-zahir Hakim and Michael Lewis. *shudder*
Who are you going to kick too? I see beerman taking a couple to the house. |
Kick to Hakim, he fumbles, Lewis picks up the ball and circles back around to the outside for the score. It's all a plan of diversion, just like the fumble by Stecker last year that he picked up and took to the heaz.
|
Hakim i just hate to see him in a Saints uniform... am i the only one like this ?
