Undrafted free agents often have multiple offers from NFL teams after the draft ends, and teams can entice the prospects by offering signing bonuses on top of the minimum salaries.
The New Orleans Saints have already given out signing bonuses to at least nine rookies as of Monday (April 29) afternoon, and the deals provide an indication of which prospects the Saints coveted most after the selection process ended Saturday. In addition to signing bonuses, some teams will guarantee a portion of a player’s base salary, which the Saints have done for three players. The group of undrafted rookie signings will likely continue to grow this week, but for now, here are the nine that received extra money from the Saints. *Wyoming defensive end Carl Granderson: $15,000 signing bonus, $70,000 base salary guaranteed *Villanova offensive tackle Ethan Greenridge: $7,500 signing bonus, $30,000 base salary guaranteed *Georgia long snapper Nick Moore: $5,000 signing bonus, $10,000 guaranteed *USC edge Porter Gustin: $10,000 signing bonus *Texas wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey: $2,500 signing bonus *Florida State offensive tackle Derrick Kelly: $2,000 signing bonus *Kennesaw State running back Darnell Holland: $1,000 signing bonus *Monmouth tight end Jake Powell: $1,000 signing bonus *Auburn linebacker Darrell Williams: $1,000 signing bonus NOLA |

That usually means they really want the player. Considering the amount Granderson got I'm wondering if they see him as a potential replacement for Okafor.

Good business- establish loyalty
Doesn't always work tho- we paid out Okafor's bonus last year, and he's gone |

One or two of them making the roster would be awesome. We have had a ton of success with UDFA's. Fingers crossed.

LB Chase Hansen is comparable in path to Thomas Davis as he was a safety until recently converting to OLB. The young buck can run. Robertson has his hands full v. Hansen... And keep an eye on CB Jordan Wyatt, reminds me a lot of former 7th round pick Cortland Finnegan, not great SPARQ, but the kid is in-your-face type football. Wyatt v. Hardee... Corbin Kaufusi is similar player to Davenport; by now you've probably seen the image of him leaping over the line to block a kick; if he can contribute like Okafor on special teams - watch out. Edwards to DT3... Little concerned for Gustin as he was signed and described by the Saints as a DE; he's a SAM LBer, and that's where they should play him, not like Hau'oli Kikaha on the line. Gustin v. Biegel v. Klein... Humphrey is known as a threat out of the slot; not sure how that fits as that's actually where @CantGuardMike does most of his damage... Taylor Stallworth may be in trouble from what I've seen Bigelow - very strong young man... |
