Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

1 Attachment(s)
The Saints announced their Hall of Fame inductees for 2019, with running back Reggie Bush and receiver Marques Colston the inductees this year.

The team also will honor former Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco with the Joe Gemelli “Fleur de Lis” award for her contributions to the organization.

Bush, the second overall pick in 2006, played five seasons in New Orleans. He appeared in 60 games and recorded 4,982 all-purpose yards and 33 touchdowns with the Saints.

Bush carried 524 times for 2,090 yards with 17 touchdowns. He also caught 294 passes for 2,142 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Saints drafted Colston in the seventh round in 2006.

He played in 146 career games for the Saints, with 106 starts, and made 711 receptions for 9,759 yards and 72 touchdowns. Colston is ranked first in team history in catches, receiving yardage, receiving touchdowns, total touchdowns (72) and tied for first with 28 100-yard receiving performances.

All 72 of Colston’s touchdown catches were thrown by Drew Brees, making the duo the sixth-most prolific all-time in scoring pass plays.

Three seasons after the end of his playing career, Colston is ranked 45th all-time in NFL history in receptions, 52nd in receiving yardage and is tied for 39th in receiving touchdowns.

Maybe it's me but I'll remember Colston more for what he did than Bush.

Bush always seemed on the verge of being what Kamara is today.

Bush had his moments, but he was a massive disappointment that never lived up to his hype or the position he was drafted at. Pierre Thomas greatly out-shined him most of the time between 2008-2010.

I never felt like we missed Bush after he left, but I certainly felt Colston's presence was missed.

I would agree with Colston but Bush probably not.

If Brooks is in, mostly definitely Bush deserves in.

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

Definitely polar opposites in where they were drafted and what they accomplished...

Colston is probably my favorite receiver of all time; stoic, reliable, 100% effort; as I write this, can't help but think his career should have been longer with better medical care which the Saints state they've improved...

Bush has special memories as we were in a Metairie restaurant when word broke night before draft that Houston was taking Mario; you could feel there was going to be something different about these Saints...

Nothing will changed that moment...

I'm a Bush apologist and felt then he was not used properly by Payton; hindsight is better perspective, so in fairness to Payton, he too was learning and refining his offense to today's juggernaut...

But I also acknowledge that Reggie came in spoiled by the USC Football, Inc, and was not ready to put in the extra work to maximize his abilities in matchup in the NFL; you can't get by on speed alone in the NFL...

Still, I'm grateful after all these years of watching the Saints waste terrific talent and still getting another chance as we did - Colston was a fluke that all teams, including Mickster, passed on that we developed into elite talent...

And both shined bright for this team...

Congrats to both.

IMO Marques Colston aka "The Quiet Storm" is still the most underrated WR in the NFL. He was an outstanding player.

Best compensatory pick ever :p.

I guess Joe Montana and Jerry Rice are #1?

Congratulations guys.

The best player in NFL history to never play in a Pro Bowl.

A shame Colston fell off a cliff at the end. I guess injuries piled up and there was nothing left. Started dropping easy grabs. Reality set in quick on the non forgiving hands of time but by far my favorite Saints WR. Dude was a beast and never ran his mouth. Just played the damn game and left it on the field.

Reggie should have been a CB. He was never willing to take the abuse of a RB and it showed. He would have had a much better and longer career as a DB. He did it a little it college and did well. Should have changed positions IMO. He was not a RB but did ok.

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

I get nostalgic thinking about the era of both those guys.

Worth it IMO. Maybe I’m getting softer as I get older.

I think Reggie had somewhat of an imperfect storm, he was trying to live up to impossible expectations, which probably wasn’t his fault. Sean would probably use him differently today than he did then.

But he was a Saint, a great special teams/screen weapon, and was I think great for the city and fan base nationally.

Footnote -

Sean Payton touched on it at the induction ceremony but 6 members of the 2006 Saints draft class played 10 or more years in the league.

That was an awesome draft class.

Colston is my favorite Saints WR for now. Michael Thomas has the potential to be the best WR of all time. Bush was just fine but never consistent enough in retrospect.

Kamara had more highlight plays in one season than Bush had his entire career. We need to start raising the bar on who gets in the Saints HOF. I don't see how Bush belongs. I would put Sproles in there way ahead of Bush. Doesn't Sproles still have the APY record for the NFL?

I totally get that angle Beast however ...

The decision makers behind the Saints HOF voting could also factor in what "impact" (Hurricane Katrina) /contributions a player may have made to the organization off the field that would evoke memories for years or in some cases a lifetime. IIRC (someone correct me if that isn't accurate), Bush still hold both records (longest runs) in Saints playoff punt & receiving TD history. I don't think we get a Lombardi without him. Key piece to the offense.

He's not in the Canton discussion, however Saints HOF ?? I'd say yes without question :bng:.

Yeah, he was on the SB team and as you stated, holds some team records, did a lot of good for the community so I get it. I guess I'm just spoiled rotten with Kamara now. He raised the bar too damn high.

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

Compare him to his contemporaries, even on his team, and you'll find Pierre Thomas actually has more Saints RB numbers than Reggie...

Pierre Thomas is 5th with 3,745 RuYds & Reggie is 12th at 2090 RuYds; Receiving Back? Well, Pierre Thomas is 1st among RBs (16th OAL) with 2,608 ReYds & Reggie is 3rd among RBs (22nd OAL) with 2,142 ReYds...

So the numbers may not be there, but that doesn't diminish Bush's contribution and what his drafting meant for the Saints and Saints fans...

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

The good old days of Colston, PT23 and Lance Moore.

Bush would have his moments where he look like he wanted to play, but I'll always have fond memories of PT23 over Bush, Pierre just never gave up, played every snap like it was his last. The force he could generate to stay off the floor and move the pile was unreal.

^^^ With the exception of Bushrod, I think PT was the best player from the 2007 Saints draft class. Well, in his case ...un drafted.

Pierre...definitely way at the top of favorite Saints list.

Criminally disrespected

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

After Katrina and all that San Antonio nonsense the drafting of Bush meant to me that the ownership was serious about staying and winning so for that Reggie will always be special to me. In 2009 there were several games where he really made an impact including the Super Bowl. His TD in the Eagles game which was tight up till that point really broke that game open. He soared what looked like 7-8 yards for a TD in the Dolphins crazy come back. If we hadn't gotten home field, who knows what would have happened in the NFCCG. He took over the Cardinals playoff game with that video game-like (on easy) TD. I never thought we'd ever get to a SuperBowl much less win one. For that I'll always be grateful. 10 letters painted on the dome's walls seems a pair price.

What about Gleason? He blocked a punt and was a decent special team guy but does he belong in the HOF? I say he does, He’s got my vote. He did and continues to do more for us and our community than any other player in Saints history.
It’s not all about what’s done on the field.

I believe the bar is set so low for our HOF due to how long it took for the franchise to have some winning glory.

Reggie isn't even the worst for me. What the hell is Bobby Hebert doing in the Saints HOF? The Cajun Cannon was the biggest problem with those old Mora teams. It's easy to blame OC Carl Smith until looking at the offensive turn around in 1994-1995 with Jim Everett at QB. Hebert saved his absolute worst games for the playoffs, look them up. If advanced stats existed back then, he would've been compared to Blake Bortles and yet he's in the Saints HOF and we remember him fondly for some reason.

I remember Gleason being part of a blocked punt against the Bucs in 2002. Can't remember if it was the home game, or the season opener on the road. We blocked in both of those games.

The Haslett teams may have been stuck in mediocrity of 8-8 and 9-7 seasons, but we had some awesome special teams... Beer Man was a joy to watch.

He had 3 but the Atlanta blocked kick may go down as the most important play in franchise history given the impact it had on the city. Beer Man was fun as hell to watch.
And who knows what would have happened if Haslett didn’t have such a hard on for Brooks.

Grew up on Bayous Lafourche and Terrebonne and my family wasn't big Hebert fans of those wounded ducks; plus, he rivaled Diliberto in butchering the English language, but Hebert wasn't the problem - Mora was...

Mora didn't trust his players, his staff, often pulled most pass plays out of the play scripte, making the offense predictable; Hebert clarified this when he had Carl Smith on his show and callers were looking to vent...

Following weeks after that show other players on those teams corroborated Hebert's take on that time; Carl Smith was still the loyal soldier even though Mora has let him take the brunt of criticism for the offense...

Ron Swoboda famously criticized Mora for his overt conservatism; Mora became so agitated, he called in on another show and questioned Buford Jordan's manhood, Live - Jim Mora was his own worst enemy...

JP -

Kind of off topic but is it safe to say Tommy Hodson was the best QB to come out of LaFourche Parish?

At LSU, he could flat out "spin it".

Re: Reggie Bush, Marques Colston to enter Saints’ Hall of Fame

I have no prob with Hebert being in the Saints HOF. Good hell, if Brooks is, Hebert should be.

As far as Reggie is concerned, I don't have a problem with that either. Bush brought a confidence and swagger to the field before and during games that I hadn't seen in a while on the offense.

He was a threat as a reciever almost more than a RB. And he was a threat on punt returns early in his career.

Those are good memories.

No, Hebert was better; in his very early days, he could run and truck like a TE as well, sort of like Cam...

If you recall the thread with the physics show looking at Brees passes, you don't want a perfect spiral for it to travel farther; Hebert just could heave it (i.e. Anthony Carter), just not overly accurate...

Bobby played for (believe Sam Goodwin then) at Northwestern State LA (Natchitoches), then USFL, didn't get any real QB coaching till Carl Smith, but he was as good as Brad Johnson who won a Superbowl...

Tommy Hodson was really good; actually played against him our JV year; very accurate, stronger than most QBs, but nothing special for an NFL arm; but Tommy had a good head on his shoulders...

That Fourcade v Hebert was a terrific battle in the slop (man-made) down at South Lafourche; that game got more buzz than any of the Big Catholic League showdowns back in the day...

But They're the most accomplished QBs from this area...
