Saints coach Sean Payton said it was “far too early” to give an overall evaluation regarding rookie center Erik McCoy, but he said the first day in pads went good for the Texas A&M product.
“He's strong,” Payton said of McCoy. “He is a physical player.” In rookie minicamp in May, McCoy said, “I’m feeling pretty comfortable. There’s still a lot I have to learn terminology-wise, technique-wise, because the technique is different from what I’m used to. But I would definitely say that I’m learning and I’m growing each and every practice.” During OTAs, Payton said there were three players in the mix for the starting center job: former Minnesota center Nick Easton, McCoy and Cameron Tom, a Baton Rouge native who’s been with the Saints since 2017.
