Nick Wright on the First Things First show had a good observation. We had already set ourselves up to sign Thomas to a long-term deal. Thomas had to be part of the thinking when we traded away Brandin Cooks. We know we couldn't afford both of them down the road, and Thomas at that point even clearly appeared to be the more tenacious of the two receivers as well as one that fit our offense best. So we are in good shape for this signing. More I think about it, I am glad we didn't hesitate on doing the deal.

Re: Michael Thomas agrees to 5 year 100 million extension
A breakdown of Michael Thomas' record-breaking five-year extension, which is worth between $96.25 million and $100 million in new money and locks him up for a total of six years through 2024: A total of $35.65 million is fully guaranteed (including a $20M signing bonus, a $1.65M base salary in 2019, $11M base salary in 2020 and $3M of his base salary in 2021). Another $24.95M is guaranteed for injury only at the time of signing (including the other $9.6M of his base salary in 2021 and his full base salary of $15.35M in 2022). Both of those salaries become fully guaranteed on the third day of each respective league year. Thomas is also due to receive $200,000 in workout bonuses in both 2021 and 2022 and $250,000 in roster bonuses in 2022. He is due $16.45M in non-guaranteed salary and bonuses in 2023 and $19.7M in 2024. He could also earn an additional $3.75M in escalators if he reaches high-performance incentives in 2022 and 2023. His salary-cap figure is just $6.13M in 2019, rising to $15M in 2020, $16.8M in 2021, $19.8M in 2022, $20.45M in 2023 and $19.7M in 2024.
