What we learned in Saints' preseason win over Jets

1 Attachment(s)
The Saints starters on both sides of the ball made an early impact in Saturday night’s preseason game against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium.

The Saints used the first two possession to jump out to a 10-0 lead before replacements rotated in before the end of the first quarter.

By the start of the third quarter, backups for both teams dominated the lineups. The Saints, however, held on for a 28-13 win to improve to 2-1 in the preseason.

Here are areas that stood out:

BREES MAKES PRESEASON DEBUT

Quarterback Drew Brees saw his first action of the preseason and was highly effective on the team’s opening drive. Brees completed 4 of 6 passes for 68 yards and a touchdown while leading the Saints on an eight-play, 72-yard drive, which was capped off by a 19-yard scoring strike to wide receiver Michael Thomas.

The Saints quarterback’s four completions were split between Thomas and running back Alvin Kamara.

Brees’ night proved short after the efficient drive, as backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater entered the game on the team’s second possession. Brees left the game with a 144.4 passer rating.

STRONG DEFENSIVE SHOWING

The Saints defense closed out training camp with a stout outing against the starting offensive, and it carried over to the first quarter against the Jets.

The Saints held Jets starting quarterback Sam Darnold to 4 of 7 completions for 41 yards, a 74.1 passer rating, on New York’s first three possessions.

Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore came up big with a strip-fumble recovery on Jets running back Ty Montgomery, and the Saints as a first-team group limited the Jets to 48 total yards in the first quarter.

Through the first half featuring mostly first- and second-team defenders, the Saints limited the Jets to 124 total yards and seven points.

ROTATIONS

Brees wasn’t the only starter to exit after the first drive. Thomas, Kamara and left tackle Terron Armstead were also pulled.

With Latavius Murray not playing, Dwayne Washington replaced Kamara. Keith Kirkwood came in for Thomas, while Michael Ola took over at left tackle for Armstead.

Late in the first quarter, the Saints rotated in Trey Hendrickson at left defensive end in place of Cameron Jordan.

The Saints also featured an all-backup offensive line by the fourth possession with Ola, left guard Nick Easton, center Cameron Tom, right guard Will Clapp and right tackle Patrick Omameh.

If there was anything to glean from Armstead’s short night, it surrounded the drop at left tackle with Ola in the game, as Bridgewater faced immediate pressure. Veteran Marshall Newhouse typically rotated at left tackle during training camp, but he’s missed practice time the past week for undisclosed reasons.

-Brees at 40 is still different level great compared to the rest.
-A Super Bowl contending team and a 4-12 team played tonight.
-Trade Teddy to the Colts.

Not happening boss. Teddy is on a 1 year contract. Saints wouldn't get much on a one year rental.

Brissett is actually decent at the QB position.

I learned that the Saints have a legitimate punt/kick returner in Deonte' Harris. Fast, excellent vision and hits the running lanes quickly with authority. Fantastic showing tonight.

He's had a terrific camp.

If not us, it would be the funniest thing ever to see him in a Broncos uniform.

He made the team. After the fumble he was put right back in on offense. Then takes one to the house, and doesn’t see the field again. Believe the staff saw enough. I saw enough last week. Guy is electric.

Cam in the mix gives us a serious pass rush...

Lattimore want to get paid...

@CantGuardMike wants to prove his contract...

Many underestimated our depth at WR...

Taysom Hill has the strongest arm on the team...

Taysom Hill also has Mike Vick wheels to boot...

Andrus Peat needs to find his Eye of the Tiger...

We'd been better off had we paid Senio Kelemete...

Onyemata is gonna take a big step up this season...

This is the deepest, most talented Saints squad ever...

The Colts have a really good team. Teddy is better than Brissett and it's not even close. The Saints probably couldn't get anything to help this years team. That is a negative. But, Teddy would get more/extra money from the Colts. He would get to start. The Saints would get more value than when Teddy leaves for nothing. And, the main thing that's driving my opinion is I honestly just love what Hill brings to the position. I believe he should be the backup. I have complete confidence in his abilities to lead the Saints to victories.

JT Barrett could bring up the rear as a 3rd QB.

Of all the points I agree most with your WR comment. Looks like we went from Thomas and a minor supporting cast to a situation where we’re loaded at every position. Not sure that Brees ever had this much receiver talent at his disposal before.

He will be back. I can't believe they all couldn't just agree to put him on IR and see what happens. There was no urgency for his retirement. Bad/rash decision all around even if the end result is the same.

Our offensive line is a ticking time bomb with Armstead holding a short fuse.
I really can’t put a ton of blame on TB for that performance. Not sure Brees would have done much better.
Other than that I was impressed with our depth. Little better off at RB than I expected.
A lot deeper at WR than I thought before camp started.
Payton is going to have some tough choices.

Ginn would be a cap hit of 1M but not 100% so don't start choking me out. I thought the same thing. At 34 no way is he still a field stretcher and he's no Fitzgerald so is he really bringing anything. Seems like we are paying a premium for something that we basically can get for next to nothing.

I liked what I saw from SS JT Gray. He got the second team reps and he’s a great special teams player. I think he might make it.

I was surprised with how sharp the offense looked on the opening drive. My biggest concern all off season has been Brees, but he looked terrific on that first drive.

Biggest concern for me has got to be our secondary. They were getting abused early out there and as the game progressed.

Better learn the route tree first. World class speed does you no good if you can't be where you supposed to be when the ball is delivered.

Ginn is going no where.

Well this is the last season by contract for Ginn, and he's 34 now; so someone will need to assume that Devery Henderson/Brandon Cooks role of taking the top off the defense...

I'd think Grayson would be a great choice as he could add to his route tree as he develops...

And if it's not Grayson, it's highly probably it'll be someone not named Ginn next season; that's why I was a fan of drafting Mecole Hardeman, KC's selection...

I like Grayson to spend a year on the practice squad. He won’t be snatched up if we try to stash him there... He’s not a hot commodity.

Someone will definitely need to STEP UP in 2020.

Carr, Kirkwood, and Smith had most of the season, last year, to prove themselves without Ginn. They couldn't.

Big shoes to fill once Ginn walks into the sunset.

Three years, that's how long most receivers really need to be at full-on speed; for example, Lance Moore didn't come in right away and be a legit threat until year 3...

Each WR has his own style, but with the number of guys we've got, we can rotate them, keep 'em fresh, and throw different looks to keep defenses honest...

A WR drafted in the third round and up should come in and contribute right away, first rounders should be just-add-water starters; so considering what we've got invested, all these young guys are hits in my book...

Agreed on the first part.

Trequan Smith just doesn't look like he wants it out there ... at least not last night. Outside of the Redskins and Philly games, I've yet to see any consistent production from him.

For comparison I've watched Cowboys WR Michael Gallup (selected a few picks before Tre in 2018 draft) dominate this pre season and also in actual games with lesser talent throwing him the ball.

Tre needs to get it together. No excuses.

I think it may be a between the ears issue. If he can't make the right reads and get on the same page as Brees, he's going to hesitate and play slow. Not that he doesn't want it. He may not be able to get it. A lot of the Central FL highlights I saw were of the - go long and go up for the ball. The Saints O is a few orders of magnitude more complex than that.

You’re vastly underestimating Jacoby Brissett.
