Penalty flag after penalty flag found their way onto the field during the Saints vs. Jets contest on Saturday night.
By the game's end, 31 combined penalties were called against both teams. The Saints were penalized 16 times for 142 yards and the Jets were penalized 15 times for 128 yards and two points. The latter came in the fourth quarter when the Jets were flagged for holding in the end zone. By rule, that's a safety. Saints coach Sean Payton said he needed to look at the film before analyzing all the penalties, but it was something he noticed. "That was something that we have to look at," Payton said. "I’m anxious to see the film." The penalty breakdown was as follows: 1 defensive pass interference (Saints) 1 offensive pass interference (Saints) 7 offensive holding (Saints) 1 illegal block above the waist (Saints) 1 roughing the passer (Saints) 1 false start (Saints) 1 unnecessary roughness (Saints) 1 intentional grounding (Saints) 2 defensive holding (Saints) 7 offensive holding (Jets) 1 intentional grounding (Jets) 3 unnecessary roughness (Jets) 1 defensive holding (Jets) 1 illegal contact (Jets) 1 illegal block above the waist (Jets) 1 encroachment (Jets) 1 illegal double team block (Jets) The Saints were the highest-penalized team this week in terms of both number of flags and penalty yardage. The Jets tied for second-most in number of flags and were second in terms of penalty yardage. more on NOLA |

Well butter my butt and call me a biscuit.
As I see it... It is preseason and... there is no where to go but up. Did we set a record yet? |

Is this the refs sending a message to the Saints fans after last years Super Bowl No Call protest. Kind of like saying..."you wanted to see a flag, well here's a flag."

Re: Saints, Jets rack up 'lots of penalties,' New Orleans leads league in flags in preseason Week 3
There was a preseason game the year after Bountygate broke, I don't remember who it was against -- maybe the Jags or somebody -- but the refs kept on throwing penalties on the Saints defense, and there was one drive where the refs literally marched the other team straight down the field, into field goal range, off of a whole list of ticky-tacky penalties called on the Saints defense. And it was obviously the refs were just being jerks to "send a message" to the Saints.
I wonder about the offensive holding in this game. 7 on each team, that seems ridiculous, I dunno. I don't understand what kind of message that would be sending, unless the refs were saying to the players -- guys, we know that holding happens on every play, but you gotta do a better job of disguising it.... |
