Payton agrees to a 5yr extension.

this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; That's a very long-term deal. Don Shula use to get extensions that long, nearly all of Dan Marino's career......

We are gonna come to regret this decision.

Case in point, today's game without Drew.

A dumpster fire.

The GOAT QB of his era and still in the top 3 all time. Yet they have nothing to show for it but disappointment. Miami should've been a dynasty in the making had Shula drafted better and put better teams around Marino.

I hate to 'like' this, but it's how I feel too.

Yes, Don Shula got these extensions too but Miami has nothing to show for any of those years with Dan Marino. A Hall of Famer QB, quite possibly the greatest 'pure passer' to ever play the game and yet they only made it to 1 SB and lost it. Miami should've been the team to rule the AFC back in the day, instead they sat there and watched Buffalo come out of nowhere and become that team.

Unless we have a real heir to the throne for Brees, this is going to get ugly down the road without him. I wish this team could do something crazy enough to get Trevor Lawrence in the draft if we want to have a future without Brees.

Re: Payton agrees to a 5yr extension.

With Payton, Jeff Ireland, and Loomis running the show we should be just fine. Payton runs the team smoother with the right players and he's mellowed with age. We've hit on most of our draft picks and should continue to develop the team through the draft rather than free agency. We have a great blue print and Gail Benson seems to be doing a fine job. Currently, this is a good destination for free agents though, because we are a well rounded team.

We've all known that Drew's time under center was limited and Payton is a creative genius who can draw up a scheme for his QB. If it's not with Drew then I'd wager Payton will still thrive once he finds his guy.

Re: Payton agrees to a 5yr extension.

Brees has made up for a horrendous defense for years. Now we'll finally see what it's like the pressure is all on them for a change and I dont think they'll respond well.

Lattimore isnt as good as he thinks he is. Our entire secondary is once again the weakness.
