I would agree if not for the NFL being a game of attrition and not accumulation, if you don't do both you will find your self with huge experience gaps. We dont pick up enough starters in the draft to keep up with the attrition. When you lose 3-4 year starters through free agency you generally need to plug that gap quickly with a starter.

The average NFL career is 3.3 years
Brees - 19
Ginn - 13
Morstead - 11
Cook - 11
P. Robinson - 11
Jordan - 9
... 24 players over 4 years, 9 Rookies.
