Observations from Saints' win vs Bucs

Great team win as we see continued growth from the defense. Over 6 sacks, even one from the rookie Granderson! Our front is no joke.

Jared Cook stepping up just a bit.

Teddy can begin to bicycle dance kick as he lost the "check down"moniker today.

"Can't Guard Mike" had a monster game today.

Lattimore continues to improve... Evans was shut out.

We just scared the crap out of the entire NFL for the rest of the season.

WHO DAT !

I was going to start a similar thread. Special teams left a little to be desired, but we played well up front, especially on defense, and the oline is starting to get its collective head out of its collective :censored:. Check down Teddy? Nope. Lattimore just held Evans to nadda. That's pretty amazing, because Evans is a damn good WR.

Super proud of the team today. Great win in the division!

My ten thoughts on the game:

1. Harris had his "Welcome to the NFL" moment today. Hopefully its something he can bounce back from quickly.

2. We cut down on the penalties A LOT.

3. I don't think I can remember us ever having a D-line group this deep.

4. Trey Hendrickson better get healthy quick because there are more guys that can play.

5. Cook had his best game of the year but still has things to clean up.

6. Thomas is worth every penny we're paying him. He is just a stud.

7. Running game just did enough today but this is our biggest posibility to improve.

8. From what I saw Klein made som nice plays in coverage today.

9. Evans had a tremendous catch streak broken today. Lattimore has really stepped up his game the last two weeks.

10. The last TD irked SP and hopefully he shoves a foot up the D *** to remind them to FINISH! They played a really nice game so to give up that last TD is just sloppy.

Bonus: The Falcons got blown up.

Bruce Arians is a complete moron and a t***canoe!

Andrus Peat and Terri no Armstead are the reason the run game is soso this year, Andrus Peat has been put on his arse EVERY game this year. This should be his last year as a Saint

I agree about Harris. I hope we don't get to the point where wer're all holding our breaths when he goes to receive a punt. I was glad to see Cook step up. I think the running game needs some work. Perhaps they can get Washington in the mix. The Defense is starting to gel and they seem to be having fun out there. I agree about Payton nailing the D for that last drive. Sure they were up by 14 but there was still enough time for TB to pull something off. You don't let your foot off the pedal until the clock says 0. As for the Falcons, I"m puzzled.

If Carl Granderson keeps developing, this D-Line is just stupid. Malcom Brown is really starting to settle in too. We have the depth to just send guys in waves.

Just a thought of mine;

Maybe having Teddy throw checkdowns and short passes against Seattle and Dallas was a necessary step to build up his confidence and help him get used to being a starting QB again.

He was unleashed today and was throwing down field constantly.

No one is talking about Malcolm Brown so I will ... He's a brute force in the middle. So far, he's been an excellent upgrade on Tyeler Davison.

Looking like a quality Saints Free Agent signing for 2019.

Absolutely, have been meaning to mention him since the game finished. He seems to disrupt the pocket often, I'm sure Davison is enjoying life over there in ATL world.

A NT that can get after the QB?! The sack he had was a great heads-up play. He’s being double-teamed by the C and LG, all the while keeping his eyes on Jameis. Once the QB starts to scramble to escape Cam Jordan’s pressure, Brown dips around the double-team to bring him down.

IMO Ryan Ramz is one of the best RT in all of football.

Notice All World Shaq Barrett's name wasn't called once today?

Not being negative but curious to how can Teddy go through the leg injuries and still have chicken legs..I don't believe it's just because of genetics..

Why hasn't he been approached about building his lower body to add more muscle?

After seeing him today get his ankle or foot briefly hurt it made me think..

This puzzles me

Saw A LOT more Gardner-Johnson this week. I don’t know if we were splitting snaps at nickel between PJ and CGJ or what... But there definitely seemed like more of an effort to get him on the field.

1. Morstead again.
2. Kamara now 3rd QB? Kidding, but nice trick play. I like Sean mixing it up with the trick plays.
3. I don't care what the rest of the defensive backfield is doing, keep putting Lattimore man to man on their #1.
4. D-line, wow.
5. Teddy throws a pretty pass. I hope we're past that Cpt. Check down bull spit.
6. Sean looks like he's having fun.

Totally agree with number 3. I don’t know much about the ins and outs but it seems like we get burned in zone coverage every time. I think Lattimore is a completely different player in man. Seems to enjoy it more. I think they do him a disservice when they run any form of zone coverage.

Lattimore is back to 2017 form, plain and simple. These past two weeks have been outstanding. And maybe even 3 weeks.

Deonte' Harris ...

As electric and dynamic as he's been, you must hold on to the football. IIRC, he's muffed 4 to date. You could see him losing confidence on a punt late in the game where he would usually field and go. I know coach loves what he brings but trust me, he'll bench him if he doesn't correct it.

Secure the rock first, then find your lane & take off.

Fumbling "issues" are correctable.

Piggy back on my own thoughts with Deonte ' ...

The best punter in the league (Morestead) will work with him on "fielding" those sky high kicks this week. Like Strief alluded to on the point after ... Harris didn't see a lot of end over end kicks until training camp. He'll get it sorted out.

At least I hope ...

Teddy always seems to play within himself rather than trying to do things he is not confident in. That makes him boring to watch at times, but he generally doesn't make mistakes. I will take that all day long!

The Key Matchups I identified PreGame...

RT Ryan Ramczyk vs OLB Shaquil Barrett, Barrett had Two (2) TOT, One (1) Solo Tak, Zero (0) Sacks; Ramczyk had one false start; Win --> Ramczyk

CB Marshon Lattimore vs WR Mike Evans, Evans had three (3) targets, zero (0) receptions, zero (0) Yds; while Lattimore did flub some zone coverage, he completely shut-out Evans; Win --> Lattimore

DC Dennis Allen vs HC Bruce Arians; Arians' is handicapped so long as he has Winston, that said Arians did a good job of mixing it up, though Allen dialed up some timely blitz/stunts; Advantage ->Allen

- 4-1.
- Teddy 3-0 as the starter.
- The whole team showed up for 3 straight. No letdown. Coaches and players.
- Can't guard Mike.
- DLine flying around like a bunch of crazed dogs.
- Cooks making a difference.
- OLine getting it done.
- To all who made Evans a non-factor.
- T. Hill contributing.
- Ginn with a couple plays.

- The run game is just doing the bare minimum.
- Harris has to secure the ball.

^^^ this stat on Evans vs Latt ... I mean just last week he just shut down Amari (had almost 200 yards receiving on yesterday vs Packers) & now shut out and shut down Evans? Wow man ... just wow.

Don't everybody forget that Tampa has one of the worse defenses in the NFL and were HIGHLY OVERRATED when they beat the rams that obviously took them for granted.

Well, I withheld praise after the win vs the hated Cowboys because Cooper was playing a little gimp and then there's doubt about the Cowboys' innovativeness...

Marshon seems to be motivated vs individual matchups because he definitely had some lapses in zone coverage yesterday - DA will need to find ways to keep him focused in that regard...

Lattimore is no where near an island, shut-down half-the-field guy yet, as he's got to work on the total game...

But the individual athleticism, skills to shut down an elite WR was on proud display yesterday...

Players took Drew's getting hurt pretty seriously. Nobody ever figured we would go 3-0 with Drew. :o

Positives:
-Our D line is a joy to watch. Haven't been able to say that since those great lines of the late 90's/early 2000's.

-Mike Thomas is the best WR in the game.

-Kamara isn't from this planet.

-Lattimore has gotten his mojo back.

-O line played it's best game of the season in pass protection.

-Teddy played like the Teddy I believed we were getting when he was brought in. He's not Drew Brees, but he's a good QB and I'm comfortable with him back there.

Negatives:
-Still need someone else to step up in the passing game. Cook made a few plays, but needs to be consistent.

-Harris needs to spend the entire week just fielding punts, nothing else.

-Hate Dennis Allen's playcalling when we have more than a one possession lead late in the game. Wish he'd stay aggressive.

Overall it was a great game. Very proud of the way the whole team has stepped up in Drew's absence. I think he probably sits out one more game and then we get him back in time for Chicago. I expect to be sitting at 6-1 by the end of that game.

I respectfully disagree.

Who cares if Amari wasn't 100% last week. He had almost 226 yards vs the Packers in a losing effort on yesterday. 226 yards. Against Latt he was shut down.

Fast forward to the elite WR in Evans the following week. 0 receptions on 2 targets and Marshon shadowed him on 43 of 53 snaps. Evans who is a stud had no answer, no separation, no productivity.

Just like Deion Sanders said on his show yesterday ... "Lattimore is a dawg all day, took away a lot of the playing field and is quickly approaching shutdown territory".

It’s got to be by design. We have played some pretty stout run defenses Tampa’s being the best in the league. We haven’t really tried to commit to the run. At the end of the Seattle and Tampa games you saw Murray get involved and he did exactly what he was supposed to do. I’m hoping to see more of that during the game rather than just doing it to close.
