McPherson signs deal with Saints

Southeast product inks three-year, $1 million contract

ROGER MOONEY

Herald Staff Writer

Adrian McPherson agreed to a three-year contract with the New Orleans Saints late Wednesday evening, according to his agent Leigh Steinberg.

The deal, which will be finalized today, is worth $1.05 million and came with a $125,775 signing bonus.

McPherson, who could not be reached for comment, will report to the Saints preseason camp today in Metaire, La. The first workout is scheduled for Friday.

"It was critical that he be in camp on time," Steinberg said. "The repetitions for a non-starting quarterback comes early in training camp."

The 22-year-old McPherson, who played at Southeast High, Florida State and with the defunct Indiana Firebirds of the Arena Football League, was taken in the fifth round by the Saints in April's NFL Draft. He will work behind starter Aaron Brooks, backup Todd Bouman and Kliff Kingsbury.

Steinberg reiterated his stance that the 6-foot-5, 220-pound McPherson was "the best quarterback in the draft," who slid to the fifth round because of his lack of college experience and because of the off field issues that led to his dismissal from the Florida State program in November of 2002.

So they can come back in a year or two for a bigger better deal.

I'm amazed 08. This one is ripe for one of your conspiracy theories. Clearly you're slippin' in your old age.

In the article I shared in the sign draftees thread it said his agent, Steinberg, feels he is not the typical 5th rounder so he wanted a shorter deal cause he feels in that time A-Mac will be able to far outplay this one, and thus be able to command more money, and not be like most draft picks who sign long term deals but outplaytheir contracts, then have to fight for more money. But not in so many words.

Got the whole want a shorter deal desire .

The point is that if he is the second coming of Peyton Manning and the Saints would want to retain the rights to him , if they inked him to a 5 year deal and he started in 2 years and wanted to renegotiate the contract , they have the collar on him for 5 years . It is a better bargaining position on a rookie if the Saints hold the rights for 5 years .

If we signed him that long, all it would do is increase his chances of holding out if he was that good, and we stuck to our "you were a 5th round pick" thing. I think this way is better for both sides.

saintswhodi i also agree that this is a good deal for both sides. i can see why his agent didn't want him locked in to long and for the saints if he does become the starter in two years you can renegotiate at that point

Horse poo

You can always renegotiate a longer contract .

You can always trade a player if he wants too much if you have the rights , Kyle Turley immediately comes to mind .

Now the Saints have to get him in as a starter by year 2 to renegotiate by year 3 or he will hit the open market and fly bye bye .

A back loaded 5 yr contract , would have given the Saints the time to groom him and option to renegotiate in years 3 or 4 . This is a player with a ton of junk in the trunk and Loomis should have had position to put the Saints on the sweet end of a deal .
