Friday Forecast - Mock Draft II
03/14/2003 Ralph Malbrough / WWLTV.com Friday Football Forecast Talk of trades on draft day is usually just that – talk, but this year may be different. Here at the Forecast our second mock draft could be called our Wall Street edition because we got some trading going on. Sure we know trades don’t happen but this year the Forecast thinks teams may be moving up and down more than Richard Simmons during a ‘Sweatin to the Oldies’ workout. The reason is because two teams (The Saints and Patriots) have five picks the first day, the Bengals want to trade the number one pick, and Redskin owner Daniel Snyder wants a big time wide receiver. These three things could produce a lot of trades that are usually just talked about. The Saints after they trade Turley will have six picks the first day and we think Haslett will use the picks to move up to get one of the standout defensive tackles. The Pats reportedly want a big time corner and are willing to deal into the top seven picks to get one. And finally we come to the Redskins. Daniel Snyder wants to get Spurrier a star WR and the Forecast believes his attempt to get Laveranues Coles from the Jets will fall short. We are betting that New York swallows hard and matches the $35 million deal. Snyder will then turn to the draft and he’s already tried to swap picks with the Lions. The Skins offered good young cornerback Fred Smoot to the Lions to move into the number two pick but were turned down. In our latest Mock Daniel and Steve make their move and the Saints find a trade partner in Minnesota as well. Draft Scoop With free agency in full swing the draft news is not very thick this week but the QB’s are reportedly falling. Teams like Carolina have signed a QB in free agency and others like Chicago are rumored to be looking to pick a QB in the second round. As crazy as it sounds a quarterback may not go in the top 5. Also, Byron Leftwich needs to have a great personal workout to prove his legs are healed and that he has lost some weight to solidify his position. Kelley Washington the receiver from Tennessee had a sensational workout this week and is now a definite first round possibility. Also with the Patriots signing Rodney Harrison New England may look to trade safety TeBuckey Jones. Jim Haslett is reportedly very interested so we asked the draft ‘Godfather’ Mike Detiller what Jones is worth and he said Jones is definitely not worth a number one pick. The Forecast wants TeBuckey because think of the endorsement possibilities. “Hi I’m TeBuckey Jones of the New Orleans Saints and I love to eat in Buck Town with Buddy D. plus we would like Buddy D have to say TeBuckey. Now that’s comedy. Now onto the draft our second Mock Draft. 1. Washington Redskins (from Cincinnati) - Charles Rogers WR Michigan St. Daniel Snyder loves to be the center of attention on draft day and he’s the one owner that is not afraid to shell out a $13 million bonus. Spurrier gets the WR he covets but who’s going to tell the Ole’ Ball Coach Rogers isn’t a Gator? 2. Detroit Lions Jimmy Kennedy - DT Penn St. The Lions wanted Rogers but Kennedy is a Penn St. guy just like Matt Millen so Detroit isn’t that let down. Kennedy will give the Lions D-line some much needed youth. 3. Houston Texans - Jordan Gross OT Utah The Texans set an NFL record last year for most sacks allowed and their QB David Carr is still sore from the beating. Gross is step one in insuring Carr remains upright. 4. Chicago Bears - Terrell Suggs DE Arizona St. The Bears got Kordell Stewart for QB and Chicago reportedly loves Suggs. This guy is moving up fast and the Bears would love to team him with Urlacher. 5. Dallas Cowboys - Terence Newman CB Kansas St. Parcells loves big everything on defense so a d-lineman is a strong possibility but Newman fills a pressing need in the secondary. 6. Arizona Cardinals - Carson Palmer QB USC When was the last time a team lost their two star offensive players on the same day in free agency? The Cards lost Jake Plummer and David Boston last Wednesday so now the rebuilding starts in the Arizona but we have to ask, When does the rebuilding in Arizona ever stop? 7. New Orleans Saints (from Minnesota) - Dwayne Robertson DT Kentucky Haslett uses the second rounder he’ll get for Turley to move up to grab Robertson. The Saints need a tackle badly and Robertson is moving up the charts fast. He’s a junior but the thing that makes him special is his quickness even at over 300 pounds. 8. Jacksonville Jaguars - Kwame Harris OT Stanford The Jags need a WR too but new coach Jack Del Rio is ecstatic that Brown fell right to him. Harris is a man mountain who can anchor a line for 10 years. 9. Carolina Panthers - Andre Johnson WR Miami The Panthers have already added Jake Delhomme and RB Stephan Davis. Throw in Johnson a burner from Miami and the NFC South is looking like a murderer’s row. 10. Baltimore Ravens - William Joseph DT Miami The Ravens surprised everyone last year after their salary cap purge. Billick will continue the rebuilding with a Hurricane. 11. Seattle Seahawks - Kevin Williams DT Oklahoma St. The Seahawks D-line was a disaster and John Randle is eligible for Social Security. Williams had a great week at the Senior Bowl and reaps the rewards on draft day. 12. St.Louis Rams - EJ Henderson LB Maryland The Rams need an offensive tackle but they failed to get a LB in free agency so Henderson makes sense here. If his back checks out he will be a steal at 12. 13. Cincinnati Bengals - Rex Grossman QB Florida The Bengals would be thrilled to deal out of the top pick because owner Mike Brown loves his money. They could go a number of ways but Grossman can sit a year behind Kitna and the Bengals have made some nice defensive additions on defense in free agency. 14. New England Patriots - Marcus Trufant CB Washington St. Bill Bellichick will want to fix his #23 ranked D and Trufant will make a nice CB tandem with Ty Law. Trufant may not last this long though. 15. San Diego Chargers - Eric Steinbach OT Iowa The Chargers added David Boston for Drew Brees to throw to so Steinbach will protect Drew’s blindside. Plus Steinbach has the versatility to play tackle or guard. 16. Kansas City Chiefs - Michael Haynes DE Penn State The Chiefs defense was even worse than the Saints so Vermeil will tap Haynes who has ‘special speed’ coming off the edge. 17. Minnesota Vikings - Dennis Weathersby CB Oregon St. The Vikes added Denard Walker in free agency but need more help in the secondary. Weathersby is a guy who is quietly moving up and who the Saints have their eye on as well. 18. New Orleans Saints - Andre Woolfolk CB Oklahoma The addition of Ashley Ambrose doesn’t change the Saints need for a corner. Woolfolk has exceptional physical skills but has only played one year. He’ll learn from Ambrose playing in passing situations. 19. New England Patriots - Larry Johnson RB Penn State Penn State RB’s are notorious busts (Kijana Carter, Curtis Ennis, Blair Thomas) but Johnson is the bruising straight ahead runner Bellichik loves. 20. Denver Broncos - Jerome McDougle De Miami The 4th Hurricane off the board McDougle will boost a Bronco pass rush that Mike Shanahan was not happy with. 21. Cleveland Browns - Kenny Patterson DE Ohio St. Butch Davis really wants a d-lineman because it’s official Courtney Brown is a bust. Patterson can play end or tackle but the Browns will probably stick him at end. 22. New York Jets - Boss Bailey LB Georgia The Jets need a defensive lineman and a linebacker. Bailey is guy moving up fast and probably will not last this long come draft day. Dude is a physical freak who has a four-foot vertical leap. 23. Buffalo Bills (from Atlanta) - Jonathan Sullivan DT Georgia Sullivan is in Mel Kiper’s top ten and is rising fast. The Bills are remaking their defense and the junior from Athens will give the d-line some bite. 24. Indianapolis Colts - Ty Warren DT Texas A&M Warren could be the sixth defensive tackle picked in round one. The Colts need some size to go on the D-line to compliment Dwight Freeney’s speed. 25. New York Giants - Corey Redding DE Texas The Giants need help at defensive tackle but no one left deserves to go this high. Redding has speed off the edge plus Michael Strahan is getting up in age. 26. San Francisco 49’ers - Taylor Jacobs WR Florida San Fran needs a fast WR to run new coach Dennis Erickson’s spread offense and Jacobs is the perfect fit. 27. Pittsburgh Steelers - Eugene Wilson CB Illinois The Steelers are in dire need of corners Wilson is senior who makes up for a lack of physical skills with great instincts and he fills a pressing need. 28. Tennessee Titans - Dennis Lee Suggs RB Virginia Tech Eddie George had a hard time playing last year with the fork sticking out of his back. Eddie is at the end and Suggs provides the Homerun threat the Titans are missing 29. Green Bay Packers - Byron Leftwich QB Marshall Crazy you say. We disagree because someone always takes a free fall on draft day because of injuries. How do you think Deuce became a Saint? Byron will get to learn from the Master in Favre. 30. Philadelphia Eagles - Kelley Washington WR Tennessee The Eagles lack of speed was exposed by Tampa in the playoffs Washington can fly and has the size Andy Reid wants in his west coast attack. 31. Oakland Raiders - Mike Doss S Ohio St. Who knows what Al Davis will do? Not us but the Raiders do need to replace the ancient Rod Woodson. Mike Doss makes sense to us. 32. Oakland Raiders - Terry Pierce LB Kansas State Pierce can run and is a hard hitter plus he can learn how to get really nasty from Bill Romanowski. |

Friday Forecast - Mock Draft II
interesting observations, what if the saints just sit tight, acquire a few more free agents to fill needy spots, and with whatever trade pick they get for turley, they\'ll still have 6 picks in the first 3 rounds to fill all other needs........until that clock starts, no one knows for sure who will go after who, it\'s been proven too many times in past drafts. they are sitting pretty as i see it and i\'m sure that many interesting trades will be dangled in front of them in the coming weeks. let\'s not make hasty decisions while time is on our side. with a good defense and a little more help on offense, we coulda, shoulda, woulda...lets just do it this time........smitty

I hope that don\'t happen. I would prefer the saints to stay put, and pick a DT like Jonathon Sulivan and Dennis Weathersby or trade the down w/ the 18 pick for 1st and 4th rounder.

Friday Forecast - Mock Draft II
My Take
Coles signing negates the need For washington to move up. The reason they signed Coles was that they could\'nt move up. Carolina would not pass up Leftwich, because they have Delahone signed for 4 mll over the next tow years, Delahone would start this year and out the door. The Ravens will trade down about 6-8 picks and get Boller, I dont see Billick going into a season with Redmond coming off surgry. the Rams will hop all over Trufant or Steinbach. They already lost Nutten, McCollum,Bly and Pace may prove to be difficult. The jets at 13 look Dline or Bailey The pats will not pass up Sullivan who plays the position of greatest need |

that maybe true patman, if the jets dont match the offer sheet given to coles which they are seriously thinking about doing, if they do match then the skins would probably try to make a splash in the draft...
