Dwight Smith

New Saints' safety looking to be leader BRETT MARTEL Associated Press NEW ORLEANS - It didn't take long for safety Dwight Smith to start raising his voice at his new teammates. A string of completed passes in the New Orleans Saints training camp earlier this week was all it took. Teammates such as cornerback Mike McKenzie were inclined to listen. "We had a situation where we gave up a couple of plays and Dwight stepped up and said, 'Hey, we need to tighten this down," McKenzie recalled. "He's been on a championship team, so he knows it takes everybody to be accountable. He's the only guy in our secondary who has a Super Bowl ring and he is a guy that's going to be picking us up." The Saints have touted Smith as one of their key offseason acquisitions on defense, which is how Smith, overshadowed during four seasons in Tampa Bay, is eager to be seen. From what I've been reading... that's an accomplishment by itself. Our secondary is looking awesome and a couple of our linebackers have been making good plays in coverage also. Maybe I was wrong about this Willie Robinson guy we got from the 49ers horrendous defense. |

RE: Dwight Smith
I have to admit I was a little wary about signing Smith at first considering the gun charges and all, but, from everything he's saying and others are writing about him, he seems like one of our best FA pickups maybe ever. I can't wait to see him play.
