I know we used the word as a positive adjective for a long time in the same fashion as we utilize stupid.

That boy fye (fire).

All interchangeable and all meaning good/great/elite.

Yup that's another thing that makes it even more ridiculous as people have slang definitions attached to it that aren't even intended to be offensive.

Retard is a mechanical term that involves slowing an engine in one of many ways... timing, restricted exhaust (Jake Brake), etc.. It is not offensive it is the technically correct term... Professional athletes are paid a lot of money for more than just what they do on the field, and should try a little harder to stay out of internet spats with fans. So I'm not making an excuse for him... That being said, people call each other "retard" every day, and it has nothing to do with people who are actually mentally retarded. It's understood (or it SHOULD be understood) that it's an expression used to insult someone who either says or does something dumb.

But, naturally, people have to literalize everything. Retard is a WORD, people! It has different meanings. It doesn't represent just one type of person, or even always a person, at all. As you pointed out.
