Observations from the Saints' win against the Colts

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-z...2019-12-16.jpg

Brees' breaks the all time record for TDs, edging Peyton Manning. He was nearly perfect in completion percentage.

Defense played extremely well.

Refs calls were much more calm, even despite the OPI called at the end of the first half.

Kamara showing some signs of life.

Enjoy this win. Are the Saints beginning to peak at the right time of the year?

Drew hit 9 different receivers.

I'm interested to see how Jenkins can contribute. I think we do need the first round bye so some of the players can rest up. Kamara seems to be getting better. Taysom Hill definitely needs be a receiving option.

Booger McFarland is absolutely awful as the commentator for MNF...

Re: Observations from the Saints' win against the Colts

Quick Hits
  • While the Career PaTd record falling was getting all the headlines, Brees snuck in the best single game completion record, perhaps the best regular season performance in NFL history...

  • Watch Mike Thomas run vertical routes, out routes, crossing routes when McFarland tried to suggest Thomas would just run in routes was humorous and annoying at the same time...

  • Taysom Hill running the Lance Moore/Willie Snead underneath drag route tonight will be something to look forward to on 3rd and distance, red zone plays the coming weeks...

  • We scored on every drive that Murray got at least two touches and Payton needs to recognize and ingrain that into his play-calling for the rest of the season and in the Tournament...

  • Said this during the in-game conversation and I'll say it again, I'm not worried about re-signing Vonn Bell because Gardner will be an upgrade at the position...

  • Know we picked up Jenkins, but I still wanna see the Eli Apple we saw the first half of this season; Coach Glenn has got to fix this regression and not lose another like Ken Crawley...

  • We did all this tonight losing two more starting offensive linemen; we'd better get these guys back healthy for the playoffs for sure, but we'll need them versus Tennessee on the road...

  • Did Jared Cook come back too soon from the Concussion Protocol? he had some of his most impressive catches of the season, but he's showing his age with the frequent injuries now...

  • Must be the Christmas memories of sweets dancing in my thoughts, but can you imagine how good our total LBer corps is gonna be when they're all healthy? Demario was a beast in coverage...

  • Call Borden Milk and tell them they can take Tre'Quan Smith off the back of the cartons, at least for a week, even if his catches against the body were less than ideal; and that wasn't Offensive PI...

  • Other than San Fran, I like what Trey Hendrickson can bring opposite Cam and with David Onyemata, who's always been better IMO than Rankins, bringing it up the gut; Tuttle has a quiet solid game...

  • Some questioned it, but I thought Murray on the screens was terrific, showing great awareness, using his blockers smartly; not Pierre Thomas good, but effective nonetheless, Sean...

  • Indy's Defense was shredded tonight, but they seemed to have an answer for Kamara, same as San Fran had last week; blowing him up more than I'd care to see...

  • With Jared Cook out, we were down to one Tight End in Josh Hill and one Swiss Army Knife in Taysom Hill, who looks like our best option in the slot not named Mike Thomas...

Taysom looked great on that drag route. TreQuan played well and had the 2nd TD catch taken away from him. The defense played great; D Davis is such an animal.

Kind of wish Brees could have gone 30 for 30. I reckon that'd feel like bowling a 300 game.

They finally played a complete game. It’s what I’ve been waiting to see. My quick takes.

CGJ might be better at SS than Von Bell, and I actually like Bell.

Taysom Hill is a special athlete and even better than I gave him credit for.

Drew Brees looked like himself. Vintage.

Jared Cook is finally showing his talent.

Janoris Jenkins will take this defense to the next level. We can go man all
the way across the board with Lattimore and Jackrabbit on the outside and Apple in the slot. I can’t wait to see what we look like next week in the secondary.

If we make it to the Super Bowl vs the Patriots it will be a battle of blocked punts LOL

I never understood why they don’t line him up at TE/WR on a more permanent basis . They pretty much have him figured out when he runs but he catches everything thrown his way and then some. He is our answer to our WR “problem”.

Our WRs really stepped up even Ginn caught one, nice to see we are spreading the ball around. Maybe Brees is finally starting to trust these guys after missing 5 games and getting a late start on the season.

CGJ makes Bell expendable. He’s picking it up quickly without a lot of growing pains.

Our depth on the defensive line wasn’t just lip service.

I was right when I posted “Brees is done” earlier in the season but we just have to bump it up in a couple more years.

Re: Observations from the Saints' win against the Colts

1. Indy's O made our D look good. Jacoby Brissett barely completed 53% of his passes and they had a ton of drops.

2. We were stout against the run again. They didn't have a runner gain over 20 yards. However we had nowhere near the amount of pressure the DL has brought earlier in the season. The loss of Rankins and Davenport is really worrying me.

3. Jared Cook just looks like a big WR out there and not so much a TE. I see this as a good thing.

4. Really good hustle play by Washington getting a hand on that punt early in the game for a block.

5. #22 Looked really good defending the run. Stuck his head in there for a bunch of tackles.

6. Michael Thomas is something special. That one hand catch was great. He is now over 1500 yds for the season.

7. Taysom Hill looks really good at WR. We all knew he was a great athlete but his routes looks surprisingly good.

8. I love that a guy like Josh Hill got to catch the TD for the record. He is an "unsung hero". That was a beautiful play design too.

9.
I'm kinda pissed we gave up that TD. Some really bad tackling on the play they scored on.

10. Shy Tuttle is becoming on of my favourite players on D. Got here as an UDFA and has done nothing but work his butt of. Always going full speed on the field. I Think he can become really really good.

nice complete game bounceback from last week. i like that we got the colts before the titans. tennessee is gonna be a tougher game so its good to see our guys really notch up their confidence before going on the road.

also, anyone else loving how much jared cook is opening things up on the field? when he's not making big plays he's drawing tons of attention. last nite felt like 2011 in a lot of ways. that "pick your poison" vibe where we just have to go to the open guy and brees is seeing everything in slow motion. this is how we should be wrapping up the regular season. couldn't ask for more.

11. Brees is throwing a beautiful deep ball right now. Looks like there is enough on them to get there. I actually really enjoyed him floating one up there for Cook to run under for the catch.

Good teams don't lose TWICE in a row.

Saints put on a clinic last night.

Brees was meticulous & surgical. That was some 2011 offensive stuff going on. Congrats on breaking the record. ALL TIME GREAT. You're a LEGEND #9.

And Michael Thomas is a damn monster. The Colts defenders knew it was coming but simply couldn't stop it. When you are as powerful with your hands and can run PRECISE, ELITE routes, you don't need 4.4 speed. Money well spent on CGM & only 26 years old .

Nice win :bng:.

"We're on to the Titans". Gotta keep winning.

Re: Observations from the Saints' win against the Colts

1. Brees looked like a man possessed and played like it.

2. Cook opens up this offense significantly.

3. OLine played very well all things considered.

4. DLine played well against a very talented OLine, but we need someone not named Cam to step up in applying pressure.

5. CGJ is much, much better at Safety than at CB.

6. Dome Field Advantage showed up on MNF.

7. Michael Thomas can't beat defenses on verticals, but still does.

DEMARIO DAVIS. Loved what Vilma brought to that D but IMO DD is better. Excellent in coverage, against the run & tackles well in space.

He was good in NY but turned it up a notch in NO.

IMO he is. Watching his play over the last year, he has the total package for the position. If he plays for the Cows, he's a household name and ALL PRO.

yungbreesus 12-17-2019 10:02 AM

Re: Observations from the Saints' win against the Colts

yeah Demario edges out Vilma in a few categories. I do give Vilma the edge as far as getting his defense lined up and just being more of the vocal general on the field. he did so much in that regard and really made an effort to study the opponent and it really showed in division games. but I'd give it to Demario. best non dome patrol LB in saints history

Didn't get to watch but caught the HLs... hearing that we had a few OL folks injured, concerned about that. From the limited plays I saw Brees looked like he was in peak form, really good to see at this point in the season.

One thing I noticed was not much pressure unless we blitzed, missing Davenport and Rankins might be a bigger problem than I thought. Cam needs to turn it up without those guys.

I agree and would go so far as to say he is the best FA pickup since Brees.

The Colts have a really really good offensive line. Remember when Luck was being punished by defenses. He got beat up so bad he was forced to retire. Indy spent the money and sured up that weakness up front. Luck had a stellar season playing behind his newly built line last year . But the damage was already done.
We have some really good talent on our D front. They just played against a group that is equally talented.
