this is a discussion within the Saints Community Forum; I think it WAS Bouman and is NOW Berger. Does that sound right? Or maybe it was our previous punter?...

You could be right Who. Whoever was the original guy in 2003 was switched in 2004. I just recall NFL Live Sean Salisbury reporting Haslett poo-pooed Carney when Carney first brought it to him about not being comfortable with the holding after the close Carolina loss. Salisbury reported it after the River City Relay play and extra point miss. All I could think was, "Yup sounds like Haslett."

Having a good holder and long-snapper is very crucial to the success of any field goal or PAT. I kicked in high school and jr. college, and I know first hand how important it is.

As a sophomore and jr. in high school, I had an excellent snapper and holder. They were both a year ahead of me, so when I got to my Sr. year, they were both gone. The holder, in particular, for those first two years was tremendous. The guy had a knack for getting it down on the tee quickly, and had the perfect touch for turning the ball on the tee to put the laces away from me and toward the goal post. I use to marvel at his ability to do that.

I never will forget my first FGA as a Sr. The new long-snapper snapped it right into my chest. I made an attempt to run the ball, but was smothered right away. For the rest of that season I was subconciously waiting for that ball to come into my chest again, and it was the worst season I had. When you couple that with the fact that our team's policy on the holder was whoever was at QB at the time, I had a very difficult time of it that year. The first two years, it was always the same person, because he was always the QB. My last year, we rotated QB's, and one time it would be one guy, the next time it would be another. One of the guys was left-handed, and that even made matters worse.

Like Carney, I finally went to the coach and tried to explain to him my dilemna, but like Haz, he poo-pooed it, and things never got any better. It really irritated me, because there was one dude who would hold for me in practice, and he was great at it. But, for some reason my coach would not let me pick my own holder. I think you have to be a kicker to know how important that is, and obviously my high-school coach and Haz were never kickers

What ???

This is some serious glory holeing if I have ever seen it ....

The Saints went out and got a cover 2 safety . The Saints are not a cover 2 defense , Smith played a soft zone in Tampa and if Venturi even get's the terminology right for the defense , it could turn out this guy get's lost in the Saints defensive system if you can call it a system .
Maybe Venturi thinks we are running some other style of defense, but he doesn't know his a** from first base so we have really been running a Cover 2 the whole time, and that was the defenses problem. Maybe Smith comes into our NOT COVER 2 defense and dominates because it really is the COVER 2, but he doesn't have the heart to tell Venturi what kind of defense he running.

When it comes to knowing how important it is to a kicker's success to have extreme confidence in the snapper and the holder, yes. It's hard enough just concentrating on hitting the ball in the right spot.

When it comes to kicking under the scrutiny of a dome full of people with the game on the line, no.
