Brooks - From Jackson Clarion-Ledger
August 7, 2005
Brooks still question mark at QB By Mark Alexander maleaxander@clarionledger.com - Jackson, Miss After five seasons with the New Orleans Saints, quarterback Aaron Brooks remains an enigma. While he's thrown for more than 250 yards in a game 30 times, the former Virginia star has also fumbled 55 times and thrown 67 interceptions with the Saints. The Saints open preseason play at home Friday against Seattle. Game time at the Superdome is 7 p.m. For tickets call (504) 731-1700 or go to www.neworleanssaints.com New Orleans Saints coach Jim Haslett rarely goes through an entire media interview session without getting asked about starting quarterback Aaron Brooks. Saturday night was no exception. "If he can be more consistent, I think he's going to have a good year," Haslett said following the Black and Gold scrimmage at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. "He just has to get away from making those dumb plays here and there." That's a big "if" where Brooks is concerned. Entering his seventh NFL season, sixth in New Orleans, Brooks remains one of the league's biggest enigmas. He can look brilliant one play, clueless the next. In a word, he's inconsistent. Brooks' numbers often don't look so bad. In fact, he has 30 games in which he's thrown for 250 or more passing yards. And he's moving up on Archie Manning in most passing categories in the team's record book. But, a lot of times, when the Saints need Brooks to make a play, he doesn't deliver. Throw in an occasional fumble  Brooks has fumbled 55 times, losing 19  and an interception here or there  Brooks has been picked off 67 times  and it's enough to leave many Saints fans scratching their collective heads while exiting the Louisiana Superdome. How can a guy with so much athletic ability  at 6-foot-4 Brooks runs a 4.5 40-yard dash, vertical-jumped 40 inches while in college at Virginia, and has a whip of an arm  look so bad at times? Well.....at least he admitted it. Brooks is good, but those "dumb plays" come at the wrong point in the game. I think he will do fine this season.

Then you need to introduce us to some Brooks Bashers cause I don't know anyone who bashes AB 24/7, but I know someone who loves him 24/7, besides his mom. I bet you're blushing right now.

Everyone can agree that Brooks is bad sometimes and awesome the next. He needs to be consistently "good" and unusually "bad". Brooks should have the weapons and the play book to succeed this year. I'm rooting for him, but I'm still a little skeptical.
