I'm not sure how I feel about this. 2 years ago is a different story. Does this mean Bell is gone?

Demario Davis and Malcolm Jenkins will be double teaming social injustices in NOLA.

He plays SS right? Could Bell take Marcus "still don't know how to tackle" Williams' spot?

He was better after he left. We had crappy position coaches back then. I hope he still has gas left in the tank. I'm curious. I'd like to know the length of the contract. He's 32. I don't know anyone who got faster as they got older.

How do you feel about the lack of communication/blunders/miscues on the back end last 3 playoff runs inside of 2 minutes? Don't get caught in Jenkins age. Statistically he was better than Bell was in coverage for 2019. Technically, Bell isn't even on our roster anymore. He's a Free Agent.

Time will tell if Vonn re signs in NO or goes elsewhere.

Edit ** According to a tweet from Underhill, the Saints offered Bell $7.5M but his camp wanted more. Hence the Jenkins signing.

Vonn is probably done as a Saint.

I like Jenkins. I was just hoping if he signed with us we would still have Bell. I see apple is gone too

Tre Boston got 3y/18M IIRC, so that offer to Bell seems fair.

He played at a high level last year, but I hope this isn't just SP making amends for what he called a mistake. The Roman Harper return didn't produce much.

That said, I'm happy we are not paying Bell more than $8 million

quick edit- Jenkins $32 million for 4 years. Oof

32 million for a 32 year old FS and we let a young one that was 24 who had his best season last year go....Mark Ingram situation all over again....smh

In today's market, 8M per isn't a ton of money for an above average safety.

Re: Saints closing in on signing S Malcolm Jenkins

Hopefully this is really just a 1 yr deal with a team option.

It's not but Jenkins did not play well last year. If my budget was 8M/yr and I had to choose between the two I would go with the guy with the upward trend.

Re: Saints closing in on signing S Malcolm Jenkins

The deal’s only around $16 mil guaranteed making it essentially a two year deal.

And we didn’t get rid of Vonn Bell for a 32 year old Malcolm Jenkins. Gardner-Johnson made Vonn Bell expendable.

K Major 03-18-2020 07:08 PM

Re: Saints closing in on signing S Malcolm Jenkins

Right.

A two year deal @8M per season. IMO that's a discount & just tad over the Eagles contract. Essentially Malcolm took about the same amount of cash to come back.

Says a lot to me.

And that is how the good teams in the NFL do it!

Bring in a rookie on a cheap deal and let players walk because you've already drafted his replacement when his contract is too expensive.

Jenkins had a fine 2019 season.

With Bell, it could have been that it wasn't a good "fit". Vonn is a solid player but very limited in coverage and teams capitalized on that.

Malcolm and Gardner-Johnson are guys who can cover with little help. Hopefully, that will allow Marcus to roam and make more plays.

Maybe in the eyes of coaches, having Jenkins gives the Saints the better chance to get back to where we want to be.

Re: Saints closing in on signing S Malcolm Jenkins

Read beyond the headline people... Jenkins is 19M guaranteed.

According to PFF, Jenkins graded slightly above Bell last season.

Jenkins doesn't make the mistakes Bell does.

We got AT LEAST the same level of production for LESS money. That's good business.

And now we can spend on Jenkins and more impact FAs.

Jenkins had 1 good year here, his rookie year. We'll see what we get the bone headed Jenkins or the finally woke up Jenkins? I would have signed Bell.

Re: Saints closing in on signing S Malcolm Jenkins

Kinda scary when we bring back DBs after they have solid years somewhere after leaving here. Then we get the old, worm out guy that gets injured or is too slow.

Hope this works out. I really do, but I'm not holding my breath.

4 yr 32 million? Rather expensive for a man on the decline. I would rather have Bell back.

I think Jenkins' camp was asking for upwards of 14M/year last season from the Eagles.

Yeah. I hope that doesn't start up again. Although, Kenny Stills and Eric Reid are the two that keep that stupid candle burning.

Chauncey Gardner Johnson earned a starting spot for next season in my opinion. Jenkins is on the backend of his career, but he can be a good mentor to the young guys, and still has something to give on the field, hopefully. We're still pretty strong at safety.

I'm more worried about our linebacker corps. Other than DD, we are WEAK AF.

Me too. The NFL is a grind.

Kiko, Anzalone, K Ellis ... all coming off serious knee and shoulder issues + Craig is SLOW & not much depth behind him. If Demario ever misses time, we are in trouble here. He's become Michael Thomas of the defense. AJ Klien's replacement isn't on the roster ... yet.

Maybe the Saints draft one.

The kind of player you sign for one more push. I personally like it. He still has the skills and will not make the young mistakes that have literally cost the Saints a title or two.

This quote from Jenkins ….

"but make no mistake about it, I was built in New Orleans. NOLA is where I learned how to be a leader. I watched and emulated captains like Jon Vilma and Drew Brees."

Big difference in the way Schwartz run his D than Allen. Going to see how Jenkins fits over Bell ?

That's a good point - Will Jenkins experience compensate for Dennis Allen's late game gaffes on defense - will he called defensive audibles that stop 3rd and long breakdowns?

I remember about 90% of this board wanted him run out of New Orleans and said so constantly.
