Malcolm Roach grew up in a family that supported the New Orleans Saints, but donít get it twisted, he did not choose to come here to fulfill some childhood fantasy of wearing the black and gold.

Roach, who grew up in Baton Rouge as the son of a football coach before playing collegiately at Texas, signed an undrafted rookie free agent contract with the Saints because they were the team that offered him the best shot at succeeding in the NFL.

ďI just felt like it was the best-case scenario for me to go there,Ē Roach said.

It was a best-case scenario from one perspective, but to get to it he had to go through the ďworst-case scenarioĒ in which he went undrafted.

He said the Saints first reached out to gauge his interest sometime in the fourth round, which gave him the comfort of knowing he had a home for the start of his professional career if he wasnít picked, but he was also hopeful to see his name flash across the screen on Day 3 of the draft.

But when it didnít happen, Roach was prepared. He said he and his agent did the legwork about a week before the draft started to prepare for Plan B in the event he wasnít drafted.

They went through schemes and depth charts and they looked at the money teams have paid out to undrafted players in recent seasons. Roach liked that the Saints have shown a willingness to not only keep undrafted players on their roster, but to offer them avenues to flourish.

He liked the way the Saintsí defensive philosophy seemed to suit his talent.

At 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, Roach possesses the size the Saints like in their defensive ends, but he also brings some athleticism to the position. He played both defensive line and linebacker at Texas, where he finished his career with 22.5 tackles for loss and eight sacks in 47 games.

Thatís pretty cool that he and his agent went through all the schemes and depth charts to prepare for the possibility of going undrafted.

I like his potential. He made some great plays. Plus he has the versatility to play strong side DE as well as DT.

He sounds like the kind of player that flourishes in the Saints system. We could use a lot more pressure on the QB than we got last year. We can't let the QB stand back there with all the time he wants. We need to speed up that clock in his head.

Edit: His head needs to be on a swivel before it gets knocked off.

Dude strikes me as a DT rather than DE. He almost reminds me of a lighter Malcolm Brown.

Seems like a probable PS DT who will come in as soon as a starter goes down, or if he performs in camp could push Mario Edwards towards a cap cut or Rankins to a trade to get back a pick next year. Sounds like he tired during games last year but the DL depth should keep him fresh. Great depth at DT now but with Rankins contract up in the air and possible Brown, Edwards going for cap space next year need to keep depth and cheap players ready. Think DT might be a big watch for our 1st rounder next year

"Two receivers to the left, Garcon to the right. Manning in the shotgun, puts Collie in motion. Looks in his direction...it's picked off! It's picked off! It's Tracy Porter again! He's runnin' free! He's gonna go all the way!
