Shortly after the 2020 NFL draft concluded, after fruitlessly sitting through three days of a broadcast event hoping and waiting for his name to flash on the screen next to his new team, Joe Bachie shared what he thought of going undrafted.
“I’ll remember this,” Bachie tweeted. Less than an hour later, the former Michigan State linebacker was announcing his next move. Bachie was taking his game to the New Orleans Saints, and he was bringing a new chip on his shoulder with him. During a short interview with local media, Bachie didn’t explicitly say he thought he’d be drafted, but the disappointment was still present in his voice. He’d enjoyed an excellent career at Michigan State, earning some form of All Big Ten honors each year of his career as he recorded 273 tackles, 25½ tackles for loss, eight sacks and five interceptions in 34 games as a starter. Bachie didn’t know why he fell out of the draft entirely. It might have been the suspension that cost him the last five games of his senior year after testing positive for a banned substance, something he said he explained to teams at the combine. He’d also heard rumblings that he wasn’t a good enough athlete. “I’m excited to get out there and show everyone there was a reason I was a two-time captain, there was a reason I was a mid-season All-American my senior year before all this happened. I’m a good football player. Teams passed up on me, but the Saints organization is going to get somebody who is going to come in and work his tail off every day.” New Orleans had been keeping tabs on Bachie. He was originally supposed to go through a private workout with the Saints after his pro day, but the coronavirus scrapped those plans. During the draft, Saints linebackers coach Michael Hodges reached out, and Bachie said that’s where his process started with New Orleans. Bachie and his agent began to look at all the factors and a picture started to form with the Saints being the ideal scenario. New Orleans was not the only team on his heels. Bachie may not have been drafted, but he did have his choice of suitors after the draft ended. He narrowed it down to his top three teams — the Saints, the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Rams. more on NOLA |

Re: 'I’ll remember this': Saints LB Joe Bachie won't forget being passed over in NFL draft
Motivation Baby! There is nothing like it to bring out the best in a player! I was motivated to be better because in high school I was awkward and never played sports besides Martial Arts.
The rugby team heavily recruited my twin brother and me because we were built like line backers. But we had no skills and didn't understand the rugby concept and we were constantly drawing penalties. It turned out we were more of a distraction than an asset. The coach eventually told us that we could quit and he would still give us an A in his class. That summer we dedicated ourselves to learning the nuances and came back playing rugby select side in the Fall. Once again, motivation can make or break a player. |

It is great that he is fired up.
What's not is that he's undersized, not that fast, and clearly made a bad decision that cost him 5 games. pulling for him, but Dude, there are multiple reasons you weren't drafted |

That "bad decision" could have been a meaningless supplement that didn't do **** that was in something given by someone he trusted.

I wouldn't exactly call him undersized. At 6'2 and 235 I think he's a perfect fit. 4.67 in the 40 is not blazing but there is plenty of good LB's in the pros much slower.

I like the production in a power conference. Sometimes you see numbers like this and wonder why nobody took a chance on them. I just watched the highlight package and looks like he is a high motor guy. One thing that stood out is some poor tackling technique sometimes. The problem is they never have a lowlight package, lol. Anyway, good luck and I hope he ends up being a great player.

Simply not a lot of "open" roster spots in 2020 on this Saints team.
Good luck to all of the undrafted guys though. |

Why would any player say they feel great about not being drafted and really just happy they got picked up. Of course he is fired up. It's going to be hard to stick though. He does one thing decent. Everything else not so much.
