NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

After the Saints got screwed in the now infamous NFC Championship game by the refs on a blatant no-call Pass Interference seen 'round the world, the NFL implemented booth reviews for Pass Interference in 2019. That won't be returning in 2020 because of.... reasons...

Re: NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

I nailed this nearly a year ago. The league wouldn't over turn any field rulings and the review would go away.

"The rule truly did not make as much of a difference on the game as we all expected. It wasn't often that the league went back on their original ruling once the challenge flag was thrown. "

Re: NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

No surprise at all. The league was never in favor of adding the review so the experiment was set up to fail. I saw plenty of challenges last year that should have reversed, but they refused to do so. It was obvious early in the year that this was going to go away after one season.

Better off without it. Was the wrong solution to a more generalized officiating problem.

Went through the motions with it. Purposely didn't get the calls correct. The NFL wanted it to fail miserably. Now the refs can decide games without refute.

Re: NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

IMO this was childish from the start. NFL knew the refs wouldn't budge but they let coaches anguish over it for a season until it took it's ball and went home.

Funny how the AAF perfected the process in two weeks and the NFL couldn't (wouldn't)

Re: NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

The problem with this is that the original problem is not solved. There is no recourse for a team if there is a completely screwed up egregious call/non-call on a play. The NFL should be embarrassed by the lack of a flag on that TLL play in the NFCCG.

I put my idea back on the table again. Coaches get a black flag. That flag can be used to call for a review of anything at any time. However, that flag can only be used 1 single time by a team during the entire regular season, and 1 time in each playoff game.

It's only purpose is "break glass in case of emergency" on a really screwed up call.

"Will coach throw the black flag?" would become an interesting strategy question especially during the regular season as one it's down, you never get it back. It's scarcity and power would mean really careful thought as to when to use it. Maybe then the refs and the New York review offices will take them seriously.

I just feel it's completely unfair that teams have no recourse at all to screwed up calls/non-calls. There needs to be something in place to give teams the opportunity to ask for a screwed up call/non-call to be reversed.

Not surprising; NFL begrudgingly passed this rule late in the off season to try and quiet the Who Dat Nation (Note to NFL, you can't silence the Who Dat Nation!) And then instructed on field and replay officials not to enforce it.
Roger Go2hell's way of b1tch slapping the Saints again!

Roger Godhell is just a petty man.....this was set up to fail. We know this to be true and as was mentioned earlier the problem still exists. Mission accomplished!

I'm reminded of the quote from The Wizard of Oz. "Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain".:nutkick:

Correct analogy but the "MAN" behind the curtain are the OWNERS manipulating their "FALL GUY" Goodell. The ultimate goal is making $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ billions of them. Split 32 ways. If turning the NFL into the WWE accomplishes that, the cure for the "Blatantly missed P.I" is take $2,000,000 every 4 hours till it feels better. Goodell gets over $40 million a year to be "THE WIZARD"

Much laughed at Jurrah at least tried to take on an employee that was 1/32 "His" The other 31 owners were not amused, you know the rest.

From an article by Jason La Confore January 2020

Goodell has made significant early progress on a new collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA that could be wrapped up in the next few weeks, television ratings have been back on the rise and there is immense excitement among owners about how robust the next round of broadcast contracts will be. There has been no serious movement towards a succession plan if in fact this is Goodell's final contract at the helm, and high-ranking sources with several clubs believe that there could be a push to retain him deeper into the future.

Agreed.

Pretty clear why we seldom saw challenges over turned but the BIGGER issue is Al Riveron.

How can a struggling new league get it so right and the NFL, that's been around now for a hundred years, can not do same or even be better?!?

That's easy! The key word is "STRUGGLING" the NFL is an ESTABLISHED sports/entertainment BUSINESS!! The NFL doesn't care. Ratings are up, revenue is UP a new TV Contract will put billions more into the "Man Behind The Curtains" pockets.

Don't take my word for that.

National Football League television viewership increases 5% for 2019 regular season. The NFL says it increased its average TV viewership to 16.5 million per game, a rise from the 15.8 million viewers it averaged last year. NFL games finished with 47 of the top 50 telecasts during the season.Dec 31, 2019

I'm for the black flag, but coaches get one per GAME

Keep Ignoring the NFL ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM, which is. They take the Sgt. Schultz approach to fan reaction: "I SEE NOTHING!, I KNOW NOTHING! Accept the fact THAT THE NFL DOES NOT CARE!!

Change the "FLAG" into a "BLANKET" a "BLANKET" covers everything. After last years "GOING THROUGH THE MOTIONS" it's obvious to me anyway "THEY DON'T CARE"

See, I go the other way - a HC should have like five (5) challenges...

If poor officiating gets a HC to commit early, that team is set up to be screwed at the end of a game...

Having multiple challenges, and if many are called, gives us a direct indicator that it's time to review, replaces that official, or even crew...

If a Tight End keeps dropping the ball, or a QB throws pick-sixes, or a HC can't get it done in the post-season, if you have history to release them...

Multiple challenges is a direct impact action that calls for the official, even crew, to be review'd and then under the spotlight appropriate action can be taken, it at least puts the heat on league officials...

The problem with that is the system will treat them just like red coaches challenges flags then. We've already seen how they treat those. The entire point is that the black flag is only used when the season is on the line. With only a single one for the entire regular season, when it's thrown, the season is literally on the line with the call. Maybe then the refs, booth, and New York will take on the responsibility to get the call right instead of being petty.

One per playoff game is fair though. Essentially you get one for making the playoffs, and one for each playoff win. Since each of those are monumental achievements in a season, the black flag is a fitting reward. But again, only one per playoff game, and once it's gone, it's gone.

Re: NFL 2020 NO MORE Booth Reviews for Pass interference

The NFL served notice last year with the failed "Pass Interference" challenge that it is their league and they will run it as they see fit. No flag, blanket or any other scheme will sway them from controlling the outcome of games. Going back to the Saints Rams NFCCG it was clear the NFL DID NOT WANT THE SAINTS in the SUPER BOWL. THEY DON'T CARE.

Funny enough, I told my brother-in-law that I was hoping to get tickets to the Raiders/Saints game since it is the first game in Veags and it would be huge.

He asked me why I would waste my money going to the game that the league would certainly push for the home team to win. He's not a Saints fan but he said "You know that Goodell will do all he can to help the Raiders win."

Shack, The Raiders don't exactly have a great track record with the League Offices...

In fact, Uncle Al took the League to the wood shed in court re: moving his franchise, and the league office has had butthurt ever since...
