Saints Cut G Larry Warford

Well there it is. No takers in a trade apparently. This frees up $7.75 million.

What's the consequences of the cap hit, pre and post June 1st?

No difference. $5.125 mil in dead cap and it creates $7.75 mil in cap space if he’s cut now or post-June 1st.

Ends any speculations to where McCoy and Ruiz will play

I don’t understand choosing Peat over Warford. This is odd.

Warford was healthy and still sucked balls; got by while Ramczyk and McCoy carried the load; Peat probably earned some cred playing hurt like he had...

...And no, not saying I'd be happy with standing pat with Peat either - who'd better show up at camp and take Sean Payton to heart "in the best shape of your lives..."

We probably will be in the same boat with Peat in a few years

Reading on some of the undrafted FA linemen (G) one is supposed to be pretty good. Could be the one who steps up? We brought in quite a few after the draft.

Saints couldn't even get a damn 7th for Warford?

7.7M in cap relief ? ... how about going after Everson Griffen perhaps? Saints need another pass rusher. A dawg.

I like that idea

Guy made the pro bowl and rated better than Peat by every site that maintains rating stats. Yet we pay Peat a boat load for being below average...

I don’t mind the Warford move, just don’t get the deal with peat.

Did we need this space to sign rookies? If not we may be going after someone

Easton is probably the winner in this transaction. Pretty likely he'll be the 6th man on the OLine and will come in the game on tackle eligible plays where Payton is in the mood to see someone get pancaked!

Warford graded out decent though. Definitely overrated, but consistent average. I think it was personal.

3 years younger and can slide out to tackle in a emergency.

Peats get out is in 3 years. It's not as bad as people thinking imho. Overpaid. Probably but after 3 years it's a 9ml saving and 5ml Dead money hit if he doesn't step up.

Nope, Peat will be gone next year, especially if we find a good swing tackle (Peat's Plus value) among the new kids...

Turned up heavy last year didn't he. I think the opinion is he is on the slide and not as invested. The cap money was needed too.

Also the Brees fumble that lost the game was partly on him. Ramczyk gets beat but has nowhere to go with Warford being mauled backwards. Think that play was when it was decided. Think they just held on to make sure they got a player in the draft hence the bonus payment

Well when you can save 7.75 million and have no drop off in production you tend to lean toward that.

The dead cap is 19ml next season. He's not going anywhere for at least 2(nearly 8ml season after) probably 3 years.

Not saying your wrong but if he gets beat like a drum in a marching band this season it might be worth it to take a hit.

Might lose his starting job but cut or traded is very unlikely. Costs more to cut than keep and money will be tight as Drew has money due next year even if he retires and there's a few players needing paid

Olgletree, Golden, Matthews, Logan Ryan, Prince Amukamura etc ...

I wouldn't discount Eli Apple either.

Saints will bring in someone with that money.

ChrisXVI 05-08-2020 06:20 PM

Re: Saints Cut G Larry Warford

Eli Apple would be about as good of a back-up CB as you can get and we have no depth at boundary CB.

Re: Saints Cut G Larry Warford

For those who play the "JP, Warford made the ProBowl" Card, just remember, Ramczyk didn't...

Further, Warford sat between Unger and Ramczyk (who had an unheralded rookie lineman season for the ages); and then between McCoy and Ramczyk (who was even better)...

And if you're not familiar with Peat's contract, it'll be next year when we can afford to take the hit...

And Warford doesn't play Left Tackle in a pinch as Peat has often had to do with Mr. Glass' history...

We also need cap money - NOW. We've got to extend Kamara, and then there's the contracts of Ramczyk and Lattimore...

Oh, you've also got Mr. Marcus, Anzalone, and Hendrickson that'll need to be addressed...

And still further, Rankins will also be walking without a contract after this year...

This, by far was the easiest lineman to cut now to stage, spread out the painful cuts so the team can retain its younger impact free agents...

And Last Year, while Warford still had value, was the time to move, trade him; we'd had more draft picks and even more cap space...

Its $19ml dead money

Lee, you're right, info I read when contract announced was wrong, so I was wrong as well; but in 2022 season, he could be released in cap savings, so it's this year and next only...

However, contract can be reworked this season as Warford's was -Peat gets more guaranteed money, Saints gain cap flexibility spreading it out as signing and roster bonuses...

One other thing that's getting overlooked about Peat is that he plays two positions, often being called upon to play LT with little to no practice, preparation...

Depth is a concern again. Armstead and Peat are always nicked. The law of averages will land on the other three sooner or later.

Peat's injury history is recent, mostly to the last two years, and he did play injured, in a playoff game, with pins in his hand, one week post-op; Mr. Glass is a whole 'nother case...

Telling that after free agency and the draft there were no takers for a "Pro Bowl Guard"....

Peat will play better this year. I predict a min 76 grade from PFF.

If we want to resign guys like Ram, AK41 and Lattimore, we had to lose Warford and his contract.
