Saints' Sean Payton calls 'Bountygate' punishment 'a sham' as he reacts to former linebacker's claim

New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton ripped the NFL over the “Bountygate” scandal as he was asked Thursday to comment on James Harrison’s suggestion that he received payment from Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin for a violent hit that knocked out a wide receiver in 2010 against the Cleveland Browns.

Harrison said on Barstool Sports' "Going Deep" podcast on Thursday that Tomlin “handed me an envelope” after knocking out wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi which resulted in a $75,000 fine.

Payton was asked about the allegation and said in an interview on 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore that he would be “shocked” if there was a thorough investigation or some kind of punishment similar to the Saints’ own scandal in which the coach was suspended for a season. The scandal, known as "Bountygate," was an operation in the organization in which players allegedly received payment for injuring opponents.

“If people are waiting on the league to investigate that, they shouldn’t hold their breath,” Payton said. “I think what took place with us back in 2011 in so many ways was a sham, and yet there wasn’t a lot that we could do with it. The players were vindicated, but from a league or coaching standpoint, there's no union, there's no representation. But I would be shocked, that'll be something that gets tucked away or under the rug at Park Avenue. They'll look into it briefly.”

That was a P.R. nightmare for the league. They’re attention was to show they were concern with players having concussions to avoid those lawsuits against the league and tried to make the Saints the sacrificial lamb that backfired. Their were no evidence of any money exchange and Goodell was the judge and prosecutor. Good thing he recuse himself on the players and Taligbue exonerated the players

It would have never happened in New York , goodell would be selling Avon if he tried to finger the Giants.

Lost on the General Public, even most Saints Fans, Goodell had to appoint former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue to take over the case because Goodell had become overly bias...

Further lost, and forgotten by most folks and the media, Paul Tagliabue exonerated the players and reversed Goodell's suspensions for the players; barely reported by #MSM...

Still tune out anytime that fat f*ck Peter King who claimed he'd seen the 10K pages of evidences in a private disclosure with the Commissioner and then later said the Commissioner had an evidence problem...

These #fakenews f*cks in the media get away with anything with no repercussions and jackhole judges throw out any civil remedy cases hiding behind first amendment...

Politics aside, You shouldn't get to trash folks with no evidence without consequences and accountablity...

It's not that my way is the right way, I just make the right way my way...

James Harrison brought it up, not Sean Payton. And being "quiet" over the last decade hasn't exactly helped us win another Lombardi either.

When that day comes when Sean retires and is out of the league ... hope he tells everything and rips up the league. Maybe coach will wear that Goddell clown shirt in the season opener vs The Bucs/Brady bunch .

I have zero issues with him speaking his mind.
