Re: Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
It'd be swell if we could go back to just calling it the Louisiana Superdome, but, you know... That's not corporate sounding.
I'm not that old, but I'm old enough to remember when almost all stadiums, domes and arenas across all sports were named whatever their owners wanted to call them, and it was unique. Kingdome, Silverdome, Superdome, Candlestick Park, Astrodome, etc. And then, almost overnight, everything had a corporate name. And it always sounds so dumb. Now it's awkward names like CenturyLink Field, Minute Maid Park, Mercedez Benz Stadium, Oracle Park (previously AT&T Park, SBC Park and Pacific Bell Park, all since 2000) SunTrust Park, NRG Stadium, and on it goes. You can't get used to one name, before another company buys the rights and changes the name. They don't just sponsor it, they want to BE the name. Anyway, I'm done ranting. Now get off my lawn. |

Re: Mercedes-Benz declines to renew Superdome rights, opening door to new name next year
From what I've read and heard, the target money will be around $100 million to get the naming rights for 10-15 years. So it will take a pretty big brand to throw that kind of cash around. Not sure if they could swing it, but how about the "Popeye's Love that chicken dome".
