Confused on Final 53.

Can't figure this one out: 4 Blake Gillikin P

Any idea why the Saints would spend a roster spot on an extra punter?

I haven't been following closely ... but don't we have expanded roster size due to Covid? Is it really still 53?

We roster a ST’er who can nail a coffin corner or a 45yd FG in the same game. In a season where we could lose someone to Covid this is genius on the part of Payton.

It's still 53. Practice squad has been expanded to 16, with 6 spots available to any veteran, and 4 spots protected each week of the season.

There is a provision under the new CBA where the game day roster can be increased by one or two players from the practice squad meaning the game day "active" roster can be increased from 46 to 48 ... but certain conditions must be met. These one or two promoted players are protected and can be moved freely back to the practice squad, but this can only take place twice per player per season. There are other conditions, as well, including one dealing with the number of offensive linemen.

For some reason I've been telling people we went up to 55. I could have sworn I read that multiple times. However, the practice squads have changed as well as the numbers on game day so I must be confused... again! This is getting to be a habit.

Don't be confused. Bunch of guys that, if they make it, will fold like a cheap suit in the playoffs. Their LG is like lawn furniture during a hurricane
