Confused on Final 53.

Can't figure this one out: 4 Blake Gillikin P

Any idea why the Saints would spend a roster spot on an extra punter?

Keeping Gillikin is a bit of a surprise, but makes sense with the COVID effect teams face this year. Most teams only carry a single punter and kicker on their roster each. Gillikin helps if anything should happen and the Saints need a quick replacement if either Lutz or Morstead ends up on the COVID list at any point in 2020. If they let him go to the practice squad, there’s a chance that, should they need his help at any point, he could end up poached elsewhere for the same reason.

Still surprising.

This is the "first final 53". That roster spot can still be filled with another player at any time. The final final 53 won't be known for days. Right?

I haven't been following closely ... but don't we have expanded roster size due to Covid? Is it really still 53?

We roster a ST’er who can nail a coffin corner or a 45yd FG in the same game. In a season where we could lose someone to Covid this is genius on the part of Payton.

It's still 53. Practice squad has been expanded to 16, with 6 spots available to any veteran, and 4 spots protected each week of the season.

There is a provision under the new CBA where the game day roster can be increased by one or two players from the practice squad meaning the game day "active" roster can be increased from 46 to 48 ... but certain conditions must be met. These one or two promoted players are protected and can be moved freely back to the practice squad, but this can only take place twice per player per season. There are other conditions, as well, including one dealing with the number of offensive linemen.

For some reason I've been telling people we went up to 55. I could have sworn I read that multiple times. However, the practice squads have changed as well as the numbers on game day so I must be confused... again! This is getting to be a habit.

It can be 55 on game day which means you've moved two players up from the practice squad to your game day "active" roster if all the other criteria is met.
