CAMP CONFIDENTIAL
Tuesday, August 23, 2005
Temperature: Indoors

Heat index: Indoors

In the spotlight: Right guard

Depth chart

No. | Player | Ht. | Wt. | Exp.

75 | Jermane Mayberry | 6-4 | 325 | 10

61 | Montrae Holland | 6-2 | 322 | 3

74 | Augie Hoffmann | 6-2 | 315 | 1

After a slow start, Jermane Mayberry has started to assert himself in recent weeks as he's grown more comfortable with the offense. . . . Montrae Holland started 15 games at this spot a year ago and will swing between both guard spots. He's a more than capable starter. . . . Augie Hoffmann fits the team's mold of squatty power blockers.

GET TO KNOW:

T.J. SLAUGHTER

Position: LB

Height/weight: 6-0, 233 pounds

Experience: six seasons

Age: 28.

College: Southern Mississippi

Hometown: Birmingham, Ala.

Did you know? Slaughter was expected to contend for a starting spot at weakside linebacker in Baltimore, but the Ravens went in another direction by drafting Dan Cody and re-signing Peter Boulware. . . . Started 22 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2001, 2002 and 2003 seasons. . . . Starred at Southern Mississippi with Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Todd Pinkston and Ravens outside linebacker Adalius Thomas, who he'll compete against in an exhibition game Friday night at the Superdome. . . . Was a standout at John Carroll High School, the alma mater of former Auburn Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan. . . . Also played running back at John Carroll, rushing for more than 1,000 yards as a senior. . . . His uncle, Derrick Slaughter, was a defensive tackle at Alabama in the mid-1980s.

WHO'S HOT: Saints coach Jim Haslett has been grumpy since a 37-27 exhibition win at New England on Thursday night. He's taken shots at several local reporters and has bristled at most questions.

WHO'S NOT (as in cooling off): The entire roster has enjoyed a nice break from the miserable August weather. Since the exhibition opener against Seattle, the club has practiced in its indoor facility every day except Saturday.

PLAY OF THE DAY: Josh Bullocks showed his range and ball skills on a beautiful interception of a Todd Bouman pass intended for Zack Hilton during the two-minute offense drills. The rookie free safety plucked the ball at his knees with outstretched arms.

INJURY REPORT

Pos. | Player | Injury

LB | James Allen | knee

RT | Jammal Brown | shoulder

OT | Spencer Folau | shoulder

WR | Talman Gardner | ankle

LB | Cie Grant | knee

WR | Az-Zahir Hakim | hamstring

TE | Shad Meier | knee

RB | Keith Joseph | ankle

TE | Boo Williams | hamstring

DT | Brian Young | knee

QUOTE OF THE DAY: "Well, it makes it hard on you unless you can find Tom Brady as a backup or get a guy like that. It puts a damper on it, but I think as coaches you try to find a way to get your backup guy to be successful. Anybody has their limitations and strengths and their weaknesses, so you have to find what you've got in your backup quarterback." -- Haslett on preseason injuries like the one New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning suffered last week.

TODAY'S SCHEDULE: Morning, weight lifting, 9 a.m.; afternoon, practice, 3 p.m. (both practices closed to public).

The writers at the TP must have a hard time deciding b/w which Todd Bouman interception to pick as the play of the day everyday...
