near as I can tell, 'haps many in the Who Dat Nation are cautiously optimistic as we must consider quality of opponent. I understand that a win is a win is a win but could the quality of opponent not also be playing a factor in the rather subdued response:whatever: to this W?

I enjoyed the game of course but I think I would put myself squarely in that camp!

Think you beat a not very good team and maybe the score being that close was less than reassuring.

Regardless of the opponent, 3quan Smith is making plays for this team ... again.

Serve me up with a plate of crow because now I see a guy getting open, making tough catches in traffic and winning a high percentage of his one on one match ups.

Congrats to Smith on the WIN & another solid performance.

Keep grinding.

I was really happy to see Tre Quan making meaningful plays. Also looks like Sanders ~ Brees are getting in rhythm. I'm a little disappointed we're not getting 11 more involved.

Re: Wow, this is the quietest I've seen this forum after a win

It was nice to see Drew finally trusting his receivers to make plays down field. I don't know what I would have done if we saw another game of checkdown after checkdown.

Really happy to see Tre contributing consistently throughout the game.

Good to see Cam get that sack of his back. Plenty more to come. He is not a player on the decline.

Murray doesn't get enough credit.

Patrick Queen should have been a Saint.

TheOak 10-05-2020 08:52 AM

Re: Wow, this is the quietest I've seen this forum after a win

There were many notables:

- Murray with 4.6 YPC and 2 TDs
- Smith being a factor in the offense.
- Sanders and Brees finding a groove
- Kamara with 119 total yards
- Season low of 4 penalties
- No Offensive penalties
- Harris now has 4 returns in excess of 40 yards

It wasn't a close game until the lead got large enough for our defense to change the way they were playing.

The win was impressive in that we had so many starters out. The Saints are still one of the most talented teams in the entire NFL. I heard yesterday that the Saints have the second easiest remaining schedule behind the Cowboys. For what that's worth, anyway.

Re: Wow, this is the quietest I've seen this forum after a win

I didn't get to watch the game yesterday, but I'm still waiting for Brees to have one of his usual breakout games (350+ yards, 4+ TD's) to quiet the doubters. Not that stats are everything - winning is #1 - but seeing Brees curbstomp the opponent often gives us the momentum that the rest of the team feeds off of for weeks to come. Hopefully it's coming.

I'm happy for the win, but don't forget it was only six points at the end. Once again the defense let the other team climb back into it. I mean, we're not at Failclowns level, but I'd like to see some wider margins.

I'm not a fan but when I was a loss was always counted the same and a win was too. So a win is a win. Saints fans should view it that way, IMHO

the Saints are a 500 ball club. No more, no less. May change in the future, but right now that is all you are. And you're in second place in the south

He could have this week, but they completely took the foot off the gas once they got the big lead. They had 39 rushing attempts (not counting three Brees kneel downs).

Personally, I would rather see 250, 2TD’s and 0 int’s all season long, as long as the running game is jamming. I’m good with ball control and keeping our defense off the field as much as possible. I much prefer 40 minutes of the game to show offensive possession in the Saints favor.

The quality of opponent argument doesn’t hold water in my opinion. When you are down 6 pro bowl starters including the best receiver in the league, lose two more to injury during the game, and still have a pretty dominant showing it says a lot about your team.

I, for one, am pretty glad they picked Ruiz with all the injuries to the O-line.

McCoy, Ruiz and Ramczyk are studs to build a dominant line upon for years to come.

It could also say a lot about your opponent.

Why are you down that many players? Bad draft picks?

No, not at all. Lack of almost everything preparatory to the season beginning was eliminated. It’s not just the Saints, lots of big names on IR across the league.

I agree. This puts me in mind of the Aaron Brooks years (stay with me!) If I looked at the stats and not the score after a game and saw Aaron threw for a million yards I knew we lost. Different reasons but the same principal. We stuck to the run as much as possible v Detroit. Yes, at a point we went stagnant scoring wise late in the game by sticking to the run, but we burned clock and passed then when we needed to. Great job coaching IMO.

We got stagnant when Ram left the game. Hats off to Payton for sticking to it anyway.

Ramz backup looked like a revolving door vs Detroit.

I sure RR is not out for an extended period of time.

Greenidge was not prepared for the intensity... flat footed and unable to have any effect on his assigned defender. As you stated hope RR can make out of the protocol soon ... like this week. That or we can get someone off the street that can at a minimum will fall down in front of the DE and force him to at least have to jump over his prostrate body.

Re: Wow, this is the quietest I've seen this forum after a win

-Brees looked his best so far this year. To be clear, Brees has never had a big arm by NFL standards. He had a good enough arm. He made up for it by working harder than most. By having great timing and anticipation on his throws. By having a coach who is creative and understanding of his strengths. By having guys he could count on like Colston and Thomas. But, make no mistake, his arm strength is less this year.
-Great game plan on both sides of the ball. The offense ran the ball and was more creative overall. I saw routes and plays I haven't seen before or at least lately. The defense manned up and played with more agression and effort.
-Murray, T. Smith, P. Rob and Sanders looked great.
-The injuries are past concerning.
-The penalties on Anzalone were atrocious.
-Making even the playoffs in the NFC is going to be tough.

No, not really. Michael Thomas isn’t and he’s been itching to return to the field since his injury. Armstead suffered a torn labrum in 2017 which required surgery and was supposed to be out for 6 months but he returned much earlier and started ten games that season, making the ProBowl in 2018 and 2019. He is getting on the older side of being an offensive lineman though, seven years is a fairly long time in that position. Peat broke his leg on the field in 2017, then made the ProBowl in 2018 and 2019 also. Lattimore isn’t really an injury bug infested player either. Ruiz, no.

As long as players have diagnosed injuries like “broken fibula” or “torn labrum” requiring surgery, I’m good with it, doubly so for linemen on both sides of the ball, they bc of the physicality of each and every play have a higher propensity for injury. As long as they’re eagerly trying to get back in the field, I’m understanding. Which brings this conversation to Two firsts Davenport. “Hurt elbow” and “Hurt toe” are tough injury pills to swallow. It does seem like he has injury bug’itis and it does seem like every time he flips a page in the playbook he gets a paper cut (yes AG, I know they use digital medium, lol, I’m stating it this way for illustrative purposes only), resulting in a staph infection and then unable to play. That being said:

1) I liked the idea of identifying a need you want in the draft and aggressively going after that player. But I’m biased in that as my personality leans more to the side of higher quality than higher quantity. I frequently say, when referring to friends and family: “I would rather have four quarters ($0.25) than a hundred pennies ($0.01). Better stated by the former George Burns: “The best thing in life is to have an extremely large family..., all residing several states away from you”. lol. Bottom line, I’ve never been a fan of draft pick “hoarding”.

&

2) Davenport hasn’t been “paid” as you intimate. A fair argument can be made that trade of two firsts was expensive. And it’s one that I believe has more truth than falseness. The man has to get on the field and play..., “hurt toe & elbow” are not cutting it.

Bottom line, I think the Saints have drafted well. Have they missed on some? Sure, but I don’t think the draft is a guessing game as you stated in an earlier post. It’s no guarantee, bc the future isn’t known for any of those very young men, but the resources that go into investigating future NFL players is on par with Fortune 500 companies who are looking at investing millions of dollars per year in salary to their employees also. Ultimately, you get burned a few times.

Linemen get beat up. Davenport..., well..., lol.

It’s hyperbole to think the Saints can’t draft, it’s also hyperbole to think the Saints are filled with SP picks that are highly paid for sitting on the injury bench all the time. That being said, hyperbole is your m.o., the “sky is falling”..., your wheelhouse.

0. The NFL has lifted the suspension. Luke Johnson just had a write up on Hurst … see below the details.

Veteran offensive lineman James Hurst’s four-game suspension is over, and the New Orleans Saints used a roster exemption on him to bring him back into the fold.

Essentially, this means the Saints can carry a 54th player on their active roster while Hurst re-acclimates. The NFL routinely grants this permission in the week leading up to the game, not forcing the team to cut a player in order to bring another player back from suspension.

The NFL suspended Hurst the first four games of the season for violating the NFL policy on performance enhancing substitutes during his time with the Baltimore Ravens
.

Hurst signed with the Saints this offseason and went through all of training camp with the team before beginning his suspension in Week 1. He spent his first six seasons with the Ravens, appearing in 90 games and starting 44.

The timing could be perfect for the Saints, who saw All-Pro right tackle Ryan Ramczyk leave Sunday’s game against Detroit with a concussion. Ramczyk did not return after walking off the field in the third quarter, and his status for Week 5 against Los Angeles is unclear.
