As for 2017, it wasn't the number of the picks, it was the quality of the players taken with those picks. I don't know if you play darts or not, but if I was given a choice of throwing a fist full of darts at one time and five darts one at a time I would bet the bank on getting more bullseyes on those five darts every time.

Yes, perennial winners do build through the draft. Those winners don't need a ton of picks to accomplish that, however.

And we all know you well enough to know how much the draft and the evaluation of the draftees means to you. No need for satellite radio to show us that. :D

Oh, and I listen to XM, not Sirius.

So you blatantly ignore that the Saints biggest jump from the 7-9 seasons to contender was because of the 2017 draft?

That draft yielded Lattimore, Ramczyk, Marcus Williams, Alvin Kamara, Alex Anzalone, and Trey Hendrickson?

Take any one of those players away from that haul and is this team an elite contender the last four seasons?

No. Because each one, with the exception of Anzalone, has produced at an elite level - keeping those positions from being a liability...

It was the draft and a lot of picks in that draft that put us there. It's the elephant in the room you ignore because you've got fingers in your ears and your eyes closed so you won't face you are wrong...

Where have I ever said that drafts aren't important, JP? The biggest jump from the 7-9 seasons was it being the third year of our major rebuild. The fortunate draft was a part of that rebuild. Free agents A.J. Klein, Larry Warford, Alex Okafer, and Ted Ginn were also meaningful additions in 2017. But, yes, the draft class was special. Would it have been better if we had five more draft picks? Probably not since to have more picks we would have had to have traded down to acquire them. Like I said before, making good use of your picks is far more important than having a larger number of picks. Quality over quantity any day ... just like the 2017 draft class.

We didn't have "a lot of picks in that draft". The fact is we had the normal number of draft picks in 2017 ... seven. Six of those seven came in the first three rounds, however. The key was not the number of picks, but the quality of those picks. The quality was there because of where the picks fell. Higher round picks will usually be more impactful if the draft is done correctly, right? Would you rather have six picks (two 1st's, one 2nd, and three 3rd's) in the first three rounds or 15 picks with only three picks in the first three rounds?

Not always, “usually”?, not so sure about that either. Go back previous to the 2017 draft and look at our “high round” success. Guys like Stephone Anthony would like a word with you, and imho, he isn’t alone, Grayson, Kikaha, Baptiste, Vaccarro, JJenkins, etc... Bottom line, you gotta have draft choices though, and the fewer you have the fewer options you have. Personally, I enjoyed the movement to get Two Firsts..., but a fair argument can be made that the price paid was WAY too steep, and quite a few here would safely argue it has been proven through his play. It’s a logic I would completely understand. Otherwise, just trade all your draft picks, including future picks away for that “high round” guy you absolutely need, and is considered a sure thing. Then, lol, join Ditka for a round of golf or two on draft day.

Yes, usually you would expect higher round picks to be more successful. Have we had misses in high rounds? Absolutely. Would you rather have the 6 high round picks (two 1st's, one 2nd, and three 3rd's) we had in 2017 or 15 total picks with 3 in the first three rounds and the other 12 in rounds 5 through 7?

The quality of the pick locations (rounds available) with all other factors being the same (same people making the picks) is more impactful than the quantity of picks. Do you not agree?

Chargers To Hire Joe Lombardi As OC
Bleacher Report | Jan 25

New Orleans Saints quarterbacks coach Joe Lombardi is reportedly "tracking" to become the new offensive coordinator of the Los Angeles Chargers, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Per that report, new Chargers head coach Brandon Staley played "quarterback at Dayton after Lombardi used to coach the defensive line there."

Albert Breer of The MMQB added that Lombardi was also Staley's offensive coordinator at Mercyhurst for Staley's one season playing quarterback at the school and that "the two are close.

Lately we have had enough talent on the team to move up to get an impact player that we covet. It looks like we'll need to trade back and acquire draft picks for Ireland to bring in talent that fits the team. As was mentioned earlier we can afford 2nd day players. First rounder? Maybe.

Exactly - move the big contracts off the books, and have more rookie contracts as we're too veteran-contract heavy...

Not so sure the Taysom Trial Period is over yet...

Forty-three (43) year old Tom Brady is taking Jameis' team to the conference championship, so Jameis is not the answer...

Fix the fumbling, Taysom looked pretty darn good for a guy who was a rookie QB and hadn't taken game snaps in several years...

Taysom has the arm strength and the wheels and the toughness and the charisma to get the team back to being a legit threat...

And because Sean said so...

IDK JP,

Golden Boy was only a 55% completion QB in the post season. I give more credit to Todd Bowles defense creating opportunities for the offense to score vs Saints (3 picks off Brees that led to 21 points) and Green Bay (Brady had 3 picks all in 2nd half). BTW Brady is the first QB to throw 3 INTS in a CHAMPIONSHIP round and win.

If someone else signs Jameis in Free Agency, the Saints definitely need a strong Plan B @ QB. IMO Taysom is a great gadget player but not a full time QB. Hopefully we draft one this season.

Who knows, SP could bring in Gardner Minshew to compete :p.

IMO we need a bridge/veteran QB in 2021.

For the right price i would be fully on board with that.
He has looked pretty damn good with the lack of talent around him, seems pretty safe with the ball and has 2 years left on his cheap rookie deal.

College career
Minshew began his college football career in 2015 at Northwest Mississippi Community College. He led the team to the NJCAA National Football Championship, passing for 3,228 yards with a 60.8% completion percentage.[5]

Minshew transferred to East Carolina University in 2016, where he played in seven games with two starts at QB for the Pirates. In 2017, he split time with Duke University transfer Thomas Sirk as East Carolina's quarterback. Minshew began to show his talents late in the season by passing for over 350 yards in 3 consecutive games (463 yards and 3 touchdowns against Houston, 444 yards and 4 touchdowns against Cincinnati, and 351 yards against Memphis). Minshew finished the year with 2,140 yards passing and 16 touchdowns for the Pirates, and received his bachelor's degree in December 2017.[5]

In the fall of 2018, Minshew enrolled as a graduate student at Washington State. He became immediately eligible under the NCAA's graduate transfer rules. Minshew helped lead Washington State to a school-record 11 wins in 2018. In his third game as the school's starting quarterback, he passed for a career-high 470 yards and a school-record 78.9% completion rate in a 59–24 victory over Eastern Washington. On November 17, he threw for 473 passing yards and broke another school record with seven passing touchdowns against Arizona.[6] At the end of the 2018 season, Minshew led the FBS in pass completions (433), pass attempts (613), passing yards per game (367.6), was second in passing yards (4,477) and finished in the top five in touchdowns (38).[7] During Washington State's Alamo Bowl win over Iowa State, Minshew claimed the Pac-12 single season record for most passing yards, a record previously held by Jared Goff.[8]

Minshew was awarded the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award as the nation's top senior- or fourth-year quarterback.[9] He was named the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year for 2018, joining Rueben Mayes (1984 and 1985), Steve Broussard (1989), Drew Bledsoe (1992), Ryan Leaf (1997), and Jason Gesser (2002) as the only Washington State players to win the award since it began in 1975.[10] Minshew finished fifth in voting for the Heisman Trophy, becoming the ninth player in Washington State history to place in the top 10 for the award, and the highest WSU finisher since Ryan Leaf, who was third in Heisman voting in 1997.[11]

You thinking what I am thinking?
Jamarcus Russell would be very cheap and assuming a 40% reduction in arm strength due to age could still throw 48 yards from his knees.

Sh1t, if you attempted 25 bombs per game and only completed 20% you would put up 35 points per game. Rogers and the packers led the league and only scored 31.8 points per game in the regular season.

Although unconfirmed when I bought the car over 30 years ago the owner told me it was a pace car in the Indy 500 it wasn’t the reason I got her she was special the battery built in the trunk of the car confirms what he was saying but never pressed the issue. I just want to cruise the coast

Nolan needs to come back to New Orleans where he's had success and begin fresh on his resume. Our LB'ers under Nolan were pretty good. Just imagine if Kwon was here when Nolan was here and what they could have accomplished. He may have several other offers but he fits in well here.

I saw this and was wondering what the hell you were talking about. I had to do a search and found the reference to a 1954 Ford. I missed that. It was indeed a '55 Fairlane that my father had when he met my mother. I had been looking into '57 Fairlanes, as well as the '57 Chevy Bel Airs, because I was born in 1957. I had the 500 on my mind because that is what I had been seeing in my searches. My mistake. I would like the orange and white color scheme for the Fairlane just like Dad's, but have pretty much narrowed it down to the Bel Air, instead because the wife likes it better.
