Will You Eat a Gar?

(you can pick more than one option.)

Stereotype says cajuns eat anything. But this question is directed at Cajun, Creole, and non-Cajun or Creole posters. I know you well enough
to know you are above eating nutria. Garden District and Uptown, I know you will likely abstain. Non-Gulf Coast posters are going, "What is a gar?" Lafayette people might laugh at me, like I'm some kind of deviant, but every one of you has eaten a gar, whether you admit it or not.

Whether you know this, SE Texas is actually an extension of Cajun Country. Look at your map and focus around I-10. The State Line really shouldnt start until you go past Baytown to Beltway 8. We got Acadians, swamps, gators, we work in the oil, rice, and barge biz's, and yes, we have gars.

I was up Lost River, where the Trinity R. deltas into Galveston Bay. (Looks just like the Atchafalaya or any swamp in LaFourche) Had a great time. Gators everywhere. lost crawfish traps. shot pistol. fished... anyway I caught two gar, and my friend laughed when I wanted to keep one. I've always threw em back, mostly because of the trouble of cleaning them, but just wondered yesterday.

Do you eat gar?
How do you clean it?
Do you look down on people who eat em?
Got a recipe?

Sure why not... I recall an old friend of mine telling me it's good. Hell... I'd eat Flipper if it was legal. Well, maybe.

Yep, patties or gar balls. I've had the gar balls, not too bad. It's just hard to find somebody who knows how to make them edible.

During the depression the feds sent agents to La to see if people were starving. They reported back no and went into detail on the stuff we turned into food. That's what my Dad told me anyway.

I'd smoke a gar....

This is one of my all time favorites. It's a rare cigar that you can only get it online. If you like gars, this is the
one of the best most affordable ($4) gar out there from my favorite place to buy stogies.

CAO Black - Cigars International
Only 2000 boxes are produced each year and each box is numbered.
Medium bodies with notes of vanilla, cocco, coffee and cream.

I’ve eaten oysters, crawfish, alligator, mud cat, channel cat, opelousas cat, shark, goat, wild hog, escargo, clams, squirrel, deer, something down in Argentina, not sure what it was. I’ve even eaten bar-b-que’d black bird and deep fried armadillo. But gar is something I’ve never had. If I catch a gar, I usually kill it and throw it back, or give it to the folks fishing from the bank. But yes, if given the opportunity, I would eat it…if someone else fixed it. I’ve even had the opportunity to eat mountain oysters…but I turned them down. I do have my standards.

Would you could you, with cayenne?

aha, so there could be a cultural or class divide working here. Perhaps the dislike of gar is merely suburban & Euro-centric. Somebody from Lafayette please weigh in now.

Totally different dynamic here. I would eat a gar, caught in Buffalo Bayou in Houston. (girl's voice: "Eww!") But I have a strict self prohibition against eating genitalia.

side question to saintfan: how does honeybadger feel about this?
