Payton having trouble completing staff

MOBILE, Ala. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à ¢â‚¬? First-year New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton is facing some obstacles as he tries to put together a coaching staff around his only hire so far ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à ¢â‚¬? defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs.

Payton announced Monday the hiring of Gibbs, who served the last four years as linebackers coach for the Dallas Cowboys, but he†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s been blocked from talking to several other current NFL assistants by their teams.

Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis, who is attending Senior Bowl workouts with Payton and other members of the football operations staff, acknowledged Tuesday that teams are making it difficult on Payton.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œI don†™t know the number,ââ‚ ¬? Loomis said when asked if teams have denied the Saints permission to talk to their assistants. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œI don†™t know what it is, but it†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s been several.ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬?

The Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers would not let the Saints talk to Aaron Kromer, who joined the Bucs staff last year as senior assistant to coach Jon Gruden and assistant offensive line coach. The Bucs have typically not allowed assistant coaches under contract to talk to other teams.

The paper reported that Payton wanted to talk to Kromer, who signed a three-year contract when he went to the Bucs from the Oakland Raiders, about the Saintsââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢ offensive coordinator job.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œThatââà ¢Â€ÂšÃ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ s the climate that we†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢re in these days,â₠¬? Loomis said. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œGood assistants that are under contract, teams want to keep them ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à ¢â‚¬? and I understand that.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œThe rules are such that if you†™re an assistant coach, no matter what the job is, as long as it†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s an assistant coach teams have a right to deny permission if the guy is under contract.ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬?

Loomis said Payton, who is conducting interviews here this week while scouting players that will participate in the 57th annual Senior Bowl on Saturday, has spoken with a number of candidates so far.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œI think he†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s had some good conversations,â↚¬? Loomis said, ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œbut we don†™t have anything to report at this time.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œWeâââ €šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ve had a lot of inquiries, but thatâ₠™s pretty typical because this is the top of the profession,ââ‚ ‚¬? he added. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œA lot of guys want to coach in the NFL, so we do have a lot of inquiries.ââ‚à ‚¬?

One name that popped up is Stanford defensive coordinator and secondary coach Tom Hayes, who was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma from 1991 to 1994 when Gibbs was the head coach there.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œHeâââ €šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s a guy who†™s name has come up, but I don†™t know that there has been any formal interview or anything like that,â₠¬? Loomis said. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œHeâââ €šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s part of another staff and he†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s working at another club or college.ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬?

Loomis remained mum Tuesday on if Payton will keep any members of former coach Jim Haslettâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s staff. While no official announcement has been made, offensive coordinator Mike Sheppard and defensive coordinator Rick Venturi will not be retained.

Five other coaches have already secured jobs on either the pro or college levels and Loomis said Payton has talked to several assistants from the Saintsââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢ current staff.

Gibbs, who was the defensive coordinator on Nick Sabanâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s LSU staff in 2001, talked with Louisiana reporters on Tuesday for the first time after arriving in Mobile on Monday night.

He said early plans are for the Saints to continue using a 4-3 defensive alignment even though more teams are going to a three-man front ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à ¢â‚¬? like the Cowboys did this season.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œThereâ⠢€šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ s no question (the 3-4) is viable, all you got to do is look around the league and look at the teams that run it and the success theyâ₠™ve had,â₠? Gibbs said. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œSurely, we transitioned there at Dallas a year ago and had some success, but it†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢s not really an issue with us here in New Orleans.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œCertainly we†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢re going to look at a variety of things in terms of our package, but we†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢ll probably maintain a 4-3 look and do some different things like everybody does around the league.ââ‚ ¬?

Gibbs, who interviewed with Payton in New Orleans over the weekend and flew back to Dallas on Sunday, said he hadnâ₠™t had a lot of time to study the Saintsââ‚ ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢ defensive personnel yet.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œWeâââ €šÂ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢ve had conversations regarding different people, but havenâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢t had a chance to sit down and look at any tape anything like that,â₠¬? he said.

Gibbs said the key to playing good defense is to stop the run and not give up big plays, two things that have plagued the Saints in recent seasons. They finished 30th out of 32 teams against the run in 2004 and were 27th last season.

Still, he said he didnâ₠™t know if stopping the run would be the top priority going into their first offseason together.

ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œI don†™t know whatâ₠™s No. 1,â€? Gibbs said. ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šÂ¬à …â€œNo. 1 is just getting a group of players and coaches together, and everybody getting on the same page and understanding we†ƒÂ¢Ã¢Â€ÂžÃ‚¢re in the business of winning.ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â€šà ¬?

Jimmy Smith, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs said Tuesday, Jan. 24, that despite his history of coaching a 3-4 scheme, he'll likely keep the more commonly used 4-3 front in New Orleans. There's no question it's viable," Gibbs said of the 3-4. "All you've got to do is look around the league and look at teams that have run it and the success they've had. Certainly we transitioned to that in Dallas a year ago and had some success."

New Orleans Saints

-- Saints Trying to Assemble Coaching Staff --
Wed Jan 25, 2006 --from FFMastermind.com

The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports Saints new HC Sean Payton continued meeting with potential assistant coaches during the Senior Bowl practices on Tuesday, confirming he was denied permission by the Miami Dolphins to speak to Dolphins quarterback coach Jason Garrett about joining the New Orleans staff. Garrett spent a year in New Orleans as a scout team quarterback in 1989, and his father, Jim, was an assistant on Hank Stram's Saints coaching staff. Garrett was a quarterback with the New York Giants when Payton coached there. Dolphins HC Nick Saban said Tuesday when asked about Garrett, "Why would I let my quarterback coach be theirs?" The Tampa Tribune reported Tuesday that the Saints sought permission to speak with Tampa Bay senior offensive assistant Aaron Kromer about the offensive coordinator's position but were denied. NFL rules prohibit teams from talking to assistant coaches about potential job opportunities without first gaining permission from the team to which they are under contract, whether or not the opportunity is a promotion. Saints GM Mickey Loomis said Tuesday he and Payton have been denied permission to speak with several assistants from other teams, but he couldn't put a number on it. League sources said Tuesday that the Saints were not allowed to interview St. Louis Rams wide receivers coach Henry Ellard. "I don't know what the number is," Loomis said, "but it has been several. That's the climate we're in these days. Good assistants who are under contract, teams want to keep them. I understand that." One non-NFL name that has surfaced is Stanford DC Tom Hayes, who coached with Gibbs at Oklahoma. Sources said Tuesday night the Saints may be intereted in former Rams OC Steve Fairchild. He and Payton were on the same staff at San Diego State in 1992. Current Saints defensive line coach John Pease said Tuesday he had a "fine" meeting with Payton this week but received no promises about the future. League sources said two other current Saints coaches are still under consideration for Payton's staff: special teams coordinator Al Everest and senior defensive assistant/secondary coach Willy Robinson. Assistant head coach/running game coordinator Jack Henry will not return. The San Diego Union Tribune is reporting that Henry interviewed for an opening with the Chargers. Sources said Tuesday that quarterbacks coach Turk Schonert and assistant offensive line coach Jim Pyne will not be retained. Tight ends coach Bob Palcic met with Payton but, sources said, will not stay on the staff. League sources say that Miami of Ohio strength coach Dan Dalrymple could get the same position with the Saints. It has been speculated that Carolina Panthers running backs coach Jim Skipper, who held the same position with the Saints from 1986 until 1995, might be interviewed about a position on Payton's staff, possibly as offensive coordinator or as the man in charge of the running game. But Skipper, reached in Charlotte, said the Saints still had not contacted the Panthers for permission to speak with him. Skipper wouldn't, however, dismiss interest in returning to New Orleans. Among the individuals passing Payton rÃÃ*’©sumÃà *’©s Tuesday was former Saints QB John Fourcade, who is currently the head coach and director of football operations for the Shreveport Battle Wings of the Arena2 Football League.
