New Orleans Saints Coach Sean Payton, emotional after his team's 31-28 overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings that put the Saints into the first Super Bowl in franchise history said he was proud of his players and the fans of the New Orleans Saints.
"It's a pretty special feeling," Payton said when addressing the media after lifting the George Halas Trophy over his head.
Payton, saying more than once that he was struggling with his emotions, said the game was "kind of a blur right now."
Kicker Garrett Hartley drilled a 40-yard field goal to send the Superdome crowd into a frenzy. Payton said he told his second-year kicker aim for the fleur de lis between the uprights.
"Why don't you see if you can hit this fleur de lis dead center?"
Payton said he "tips his hat to Minnesota."
"I thought you had two teams that played their hearts out," Payton said. "Glad we were able to win."
The Saints' fourth-year coach stressed the importance of the win to the fans.
"Four years ago there were holes in this roof," Payton said, "fans in this city and this region deserve this, I'm just proud to be part of it. It's pretty special for thye city and well-deserved.
