As the 49ers discovered in August, Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams will blitz during the preseason.

But that's nothing. San Francisco center Jonathan Goodwin, who spent two seasons with Williams in New Orleans, makes it sound as if Williams is dialing up an exotic blitz while you're reading this sentence.

"To me, I was used to it," Goodwin said of the Saints' pressure-heavy scheme in a 24-3 exhibition win against San Francisco on Aug. 12. "It was Gregg Williams. Greg blitzes like crazy. It would be a run period in practice and Gregg would blitz. For me, it was what I was used to. That's Gregg."

It's safe to assume Williams won't pull back on the throttle when the 49ers host the Saints on Saturday in a divisional playoff game at Candlestick Park.

As long as we're checking receivers to the boards on our way in, we can blitz every play.

I would like to see some delayed blitz'es, the 9'ers opening a hole for Gore and a blitzing lb. there to meet him head on, it can shut their game plan down and produce quite a few 3 and outs. Oh, they must tackle well, 1 on 1 with Gore is no easy task.

I want another game without Morestead. That was priceless. Really, think about it. We didn't field a punter!!

Please, Lord. Just one more time.

NO NEED TO BLITZ - DROP DIME COVERAGE BACK, SIT ON ROUTES, WEAR MUELLER STICKUM (tm) AND WAIT FOR THE GIFTS FROM THE MAN SMITH

Regardless, we must bring the "A" game in the event he somehow experiences a temporary football rapture as Lynch did last season...

I guess it's a little less obvious, the benefit of the blitz this year, than it has been in 2009. Clearly there were a lot of interceptions that year, but this year not so much. But there are still the intangibles, the solid sack of the quarterback, to make him start to be a little jumpy in the pocket, and inaccurate passes, hurried passes, that sort of thing.

I trust Williams to get the right balance.

The problem with blitzing is that it is a feast or famine style of ball... unless you have EXCELLENT DB's that are adept at press coverage.

With Tracy Porter and Jabari Greer, 2 finesse cover CB's.... I hope Gregg Williams DOES bring the blitz.

When the 49ers' hunkered down against the blitz this year, they have been excellent. After much scrutiny (deserved), the OL came out and shut Blitzburgh's pass rush down.

Of our 44 sacks, 20 came in 3 games - DAL, BAL and the 2nd AZ game. Players barely knew the playbook in Week 2 against Dallas, we had a short week and road trip on the Ravens' game... and AZ was just a game we looked over.

Oh, and Alex Smith has a QB rating of about ~98, good for #3 in the league against the blitz among QB's.

PLEASE blitz and leave Vernon Davis and Crabtree 1-on-1.

I hope so. GW has seemed to be a little more balanced lately. His scheme against the Lions was well balanced, he has to be careful in San Fran whne the point totals will be less.

Well at the end of the day, whether it's valid or not, it's still excuses.

We all can play that game.

-The Saints only gave up 40 to GB because it was the first game of the year and we had 3 new starters on the DL.
-The Saints only lost to St. Louis because we looked them over.

You get my drift. The fact of the matter is, it all counts.

I have to highlight this because it made absolutely no sense...

Players barely knew the playbook in Week 2 against Dallas, we had a short week and road trip on the Ravens' game...
So you're saying after the 49ers first week thrashing of the Seahawks, they suddenly forgot the play book?
saintfan and savoyk like this.

Everyone is entitled to be stupid, but some abuse the privilege.

All little common sense goes a long way.
