PALM BEACH, Fla. - The "Bountygate" transgressions of the New Orleans Saints have drawn the scrutiny of at least two federal agencies, including the Internal Revenue Service, a government source told The Sports Xchange late Sunday night.

The NFL last week levied sanctions against the Saints and four current and former coaches and club officials - fining the franchise $500,000 and the loss of second-round selections in the 2012 and 2013 drafts, and suspending head coach Sean Payton (one season), linebackers coach Joe Vitt (six games), former defensive coordinator and bounty ringleader Gregg Williams (indefinitely) and general manager Mickey Loomis (eight games) - for the bounties.

The government source emphasized several times in a 20-minute telephone conversation that the federal agencies have taken no formal steps against the Saints or individuals, and termed the likelihood of any kind of action as "speculative at best." But he acknowledged that the government is "definitely monitoring" the situation. He said the agencies have not yet requested background information from the NFL, and have not asked for a copy of the report released by the league last week detailing the Saints' excesses, but said such action is possible.

"They're kind of poking around," he said, "to see if there might be anything there."

Little Dick Durbin needs to try prodding that old mummy Harry Reid into passing a budget for the first time in 1000+ days instead of worrying about the NFL.

I think Goodell sufficiently has his boot on our throat - he doesn't need any help...

The government has other things they should be concentrating on, without sticking their nose in this. Get to work, and stop watching ESPN!!!!
