Splain something to me pretty please.

How do you "abandon the run too early", and end up with the #6 rushing offense?

Im not saying I necessarily believe that was the case, just than people would gripe about that constantly. And I do remember several times he abandoned the run too early. Not so much last year but he has. I see your point though. I concede.

Well you're totally right in one sense, Dude -- that was the great debate, it raged for a number of years. And the truth is that Payton was a little bit "pass-happy" in his first couple of years. And he would give up on the run. It was like, he had those ten or 12 pre-scripted plays in the beginning of the game, and if one of those early running plays didn't bust out for a BIG gain, he'd get impatient and sorta give up on running the ball. I remember in the forums on nola.com (when they used to be better) somebody there had it all broken down, very thorough, game by game, quarter by quarter, you could see exactly WHEN he abandoned the run, like, precisely where in the game it happened. And which ones were wins and losses.

But then sometime in 2009, Payton literally had an "Aha!" moment about running the ball, and became more balanced from that point forward. I remember reading him say this specifically in an interview. Because what happened in 2009 was that right after the 2008 season ended, Payton and the coaches did an "autopsy" on 2008, they went through the whole season and said, what happened here, what could we have done better? Because it was so disappointing.

And since then, from 2009 up to last year, Payton was a lot more balanced, a lot more committed to the run, and look at the improved record for those three seasons, the improved rushing standings, etc. etc.

One thing I like about Payton is that he has really grown as a coach and learned from his mistakes and made adjustments. When he first got here Parcells would say that sometimes he got "the virus" and we saw some of that at first. The first couple of years you saw him stick to the same plan over and over again and try and force things to work. He would then start making adjustments but it would be from week to week, then you started seeing him make adjustments in the actual games. I think the turning point was in that Seattle game a few years back, maybe 08 when he kept trying to force Reggie to run the ball up the middle. Reggie didn't have one yard in like 7 carries. That was the end of the Reggie Bush experiment as a feature back and the following year we drafted a running back (who wound up being beat out by a guy named Pierre Thomas). In 08 and part of 09 he continued to abandon the run early but in the last couple of years as that other guy up there with all the x's said he began to take a more balanced approach..It has been cool watching him grow and adjust
