Marcus Spears: Cowboys shouldn't have fired Rob Ryan - NFL.com

Rob Ryan's exit from the Dallas Cowboys always felt like a someone-has-to-take-the-fall sort of move. His defense didn't live up to expectations in 2012, but injuries certainly didn't help the cause.

Former Cowboys defensive end Marcus Spears also thought Ryan's firing was odd.

"I don't feel like he should have been fired," Spears said Wednesday at LSU's pro day, according to Rowan Kavner of the Cowboys' official website. "I thought he did a great job from where we came a year prior to that, but to each his own. Organizations do what they feel is best for them and, at the end of the day, you can't knock them for that because hopefully they're making a decision trying to get to the championship."

Cowboys safety Danny McCray had a similar reaction.

"Rob's a great coach," McCray said. "So you don't really question it, it just kind of hits you, especially because it happens so fast. The season's over, then all of a sudden you see one thing, you kind of speculate who would it be, who would it be, and you have that one person that you really just take out of the circle that it won't be, and it ends up being that guy."

Ryan won't miss Big D if he can turn the Saints' defense around. There's already a Super Bowl-caliber offense in New Orleans behind quarterback Drew Brees. There's just the issue of trying to fix the NFL's worst defense. So Ryan will have every opportunity to prove Cowboys owner Jerry Jones wrong.

I'm no one.

Re: Marcus Spears: Cowboys shouldn't have fired Rob Ryan

I think everyone knows what were and were not the problems in Dallas. They fired their TE coach also after Jason Witten had the greatest year of his career. They refuse to acknowledge they have the worst o-line in the NFL and Jerry even goes so far as to say that Tony Romo's mobility makes it unnecessary to need excellent pass blockers and they can get by with mediocre guys.

Defense was not a problem for Dallas and everyone knows who is the problem in Dallas. But I won't look a gift horse in the mouth. Were it not for senile crazy man he would not have been an option for us.

If Sean Lee didn't get hurt, Ryan would still be there. Amazing how much of a difference maker he is. Having the heart of your defense ripped out would leave a hole in a lot of teams.

So does this now mean that half of us won't want Spears anymore since he spoke in public about his team?

I questioned his hire when he came on board. I have started drinking the Kool-aid. And it tastes good.

I get the feeling that Spags was something of a "best player available" type hire, based on who was in play at that particular moment, but that this guy Ryan may actually be more in line with Payton's way of thinking....
