It astounds me at times to see how successful some players are that never won a title. Marino as announcer now has often times expressed his late night thoughts of anguish for not getting at least one. It has a huge impact on HoF status and some aren't readily in a position to stand out so much so they would make the HOF without a title. Some positions just aren't that flashy , and hoisting a Lombardi is all the more helpful solidifying ones legacy and place in the HOF. Which brought me to the question ... After these breakout stars get their mega paydays , why do they remain on a losing team ?

I chuckled when I read Adrian Petersons daughters comments about losing to the browns ... My my what a waste of juice ...

Let's all be rational and admit the Vikings are only going to run AP into the ground trying to find franchise quarterbacks switching them back and forth like half dead remote batteries until he's got nothing left ...

He's a smart guy , I'm sure he knows that ....

If he ever wanted out and wanted to play for a serious contender and go out the way someone like him should , what would you give to get him ?

Same question for a Mario Willams , MJD , heck would you mind Steve smith coming over for a Lombardi party or two ? What about a Julius Peppers , I honestly think Lofton had the right idea ...

It would be an awesome idea, but jimmy is coming up for a contract, i believe cam jordan has another year left on his rookie deal and with the way he's playing he should get rewarded

I do believe everyone's hindsight is clearer than their present day vision and regrets for younger decisions are just a product of maturity.


This discussion is not unique to the NFL, I've been involved in many a "wealth vs notoriety/power" debate.

The answer is that it all depends on personality and where that person is in life when options become available.

Frank Gore - Endured 6 losing seasons in SF.... A top RB, neither a huge contract or a SB ring, but is happy where he is.

Steven Jackson - Chasing a title.

Adrien Peterson - Chased a contract and in 2011 he got it..... he isn't going anywhere until 2018.

There is no win all career choice. Teams become SB contenders out of the blue each year and that is unforeseeable.

The problem is that by the time people like AP or Steven Jackson get around to being interested in "going for the ring" as opposed to going for the huge pile of dough, they are usually at that point getting really old and long in the tooth and washed up.

Most times "he's doing it for the ring" really translates into, "he's desperate for one more year before he hangs up the cleats." It's a crutch used to explain a player accepting less money from a new team, after his previous team was no longer interested in him.

We do not have anything to "give" to get AP, anyway -- because our team is fairly complete right now. And the direction we need to be looking at RB is to the FUTURE, not to the past, or "win right now." At RB we can already "win right now" with what we have! But PT is 27-ish, Sproles is 30, Ingram is not working out (probably gone after this contract at the latest), Robinson is young with plenty of upside....signing an aging player who is chasing a ring is the kind of thing for a desperate "WIN NOW" team, that is missing 1 or 2 pieces, with a coach on the hot seat, and it very seldom works out. We are simply not that team.

Peppers is a good example -- people in Chicago were all psyched that he was coming there for the ring, and now they are complaining that he doesn't appear to have enough gas in the tank, he's not making the impact they had projected onto him.

In Marino's case he made the playoffs 10 of his 17 years, so it doesn't look like he was on the wrong team, he just didn't get it done.


Peterson has been in the playoffs 3 of his 7 years... Again, just didn't get it done.

From all the interviews I've read and seen where Peterson has talked about his career choices - he has never once seemed remorseful about re-signing with the Vikes.

To me it seems like he is more driven by the goal of surpassing Emmet Smith's record than winning the SB, and Vikes are a good place to chase that goal since they let him rush almost as much as he wants.

There's no question about whether or not AP will be a first ballot HOF inductee, regardless if he ever raises the Lombardi trophy.
