Rob Ryan is just one piece of the problems on defense

I will preface this rant by saying I was all for the hiring of Rob Ryan. I thought he would bring a similar emulation of Gregg Williams' attacking defense that would generate big takeaways. My mistake.

Rob Ryan should absolutely get fired. He has deteriorated this defense in just a few years. His first year was a total anomaly. He opened up what was a rigid, restricting and misplaced scheme from Spagnulo and allowed the players to play a scheme more suiting their style and abilities. They had been used to attacking and freelancing under Williams and didn't adapt to the strict defense of SPags. But then we lost a lot of veteran leadership from this defense. No more Harper, Jenkins, Vilma, Smith and I am certain this had a lot to do with helping his initial success.

Maybe these moves were implemented by Ryan and maybe not but I guarantee he had input and fingerprints on every defensive FA we brought in and I dare say they were all terrible moves. Until this year we got most of our defensive drafting and talent evaluation wrong. He has built what we see today. It's atrocious and he's had 3 years to do it. There is no reason to continue the madness.

Dennis Allen or whomever takes over is in no better position to succeed. It's not scheme anymore, it's effort, it's pride and it's heart and we have thrown in the towel on these.

On the bright side there are a few pieces to build off of but it is not a stocked cupboard of talent. In the secondary you keep Lewis, Swann and Breaux. Hopefully PJ Williams makes it back next year. Browner, Vaccaro, Byrd and Wilson can all walk away fast. LBers you keep Kikaha, Anthony and Ellerbe. No one else merits return. And on the line Cam Jordan is very good but needs help. I like Edebali as depth. Richardson and Davison are nice depth guys. Jenkins is a toss up and all else are free to go.

This team needs an impact player on every level of the defense and with our cap situation, barring creatively insane drafting and/or bargain finds in FA we have very little hope of this defense coming around for a few years. I love to watch solid defense and it is so sad to watch these guys.
