NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport wrote "I'm told he has to take a hometown discount to return."

I wouldn't be disappointed if he retired or decided to play for someone else... I'm ready for a change, it would be nice to see what we have in Garrett Grayson first though

He doesn't need to take a discount... Just extend his contract by a year or two and shift money into a 2016 signing bonus making it a front-loaded contract where he makes essentially the same next year without the cap issues.

How frickin' stupid can you get? Rapaport is the most ignorant of all "NFL insiders". Brees will restructure as planned for the past couple of years and the press will call it a "hometown discount" which will be nothing more than a cost accounting move which favors both Brees and the Saints, just like every other "hometown discount" in the history of the game.

What we would have is a player that is nowhere close to being viable now and maybe ever as a starter. If being destined to winning four or five games at the most are not disappointing to you then by all means hope for that change.

Not really a "hometown discount". It would be just bringing his contract back to the real world. He will extend it by a year and knock it down to 20 million a year. Saves the Saints 10 million and he gets to retire a Saint. No team will trade for Brees at 30 million. It just won't happen. Either he fixes it or the team will be in cap hell again next year. No cutting or trading at this point.
