Will the Saints Release Jairus Byrd This Offseason?

1 Attachment(s)
The New Orleans Saints will need to do a ton of work to get back to the level of Super Bowl contenders; even so they will need to overhaul their cap situation as they currently have little to no room to make any type of moves this free agency period.

Jarius Byrd has been a weight on the Saints cap space for some time and this may finally be the season they can figure something out a solution to his ridiculous cap hit. Byrd is slated to count $10,900,000 against the cap and his huge cap number makes it impossible for the Saints to negotiate around it.

In 2015 Byrd started in 12 games and played in 13, he recorded 53 combined tackles, a sack, interception, a forced fumble, and 3 pass defenses. In his career he has amassed 431 combined tackles, 4 sacks, 38 pass defenses, 23 interceptions, 13 forced fumbles, and 2 defensive touchdowns.

Actually, it isn't so farfetched at this point.

Cap hit is $10.9 million. Dead cap is $11.4 million. So it's only $500,000 difference.

A release after June 1 would split the $11.4 million across 2016 and 2017. So in 2016 the payout would be $5.7 million. So that release would save $5.2 million this year while hanging another $5.7 million on the cap next year.

But one way or the other the dead money has to be paid because those are the guaranteed signing bonus dollars. The key question is Byrd worth the $7.4 million in salary that he is due for the 2016 season? Those are the dollars that are saved by releasing him.

Sucking it up one more year would make more sense IMO
2016 $10,900,000 $11,400,000

now after the 2016 season I can see it. Spread it out now.
2017 $11,700,000 $8,000,000
Actually when he sighed this deal I had him pegged as done with after 2017
2018 $12,200,000 $4,600,000
2019 $10,200,000 $1,200,000

Add to it the simple fact we have nothing on this team i the way of quality depth as it is for a FS. Or SS. Not one starter can be had from the group.

Besides who knows the entire starting secondary might actually be healthy and only have to deal with minor injuries for a change.

Put a SS next to Byrd that actually lets him roam free would amaze me. Two I like that can play the SS and make the move to FS when you kick Byrd to the curb are.

If the saints make the move now it does nothing to help our cap really. So they better keep an eye on Jalen Ramsey as a trade up replacement if he slips close to the tenth pick which i still think is not so far fetch with a player like him. Talent is there but he is a jack of all trades and so far a master of none.

That or trade down get picks and let the mid priced low level FA walk. Entertain the idea of drafting say Darian Thompson FS/SS Boise State in the bottom half of round 1.

Personally I would hate to see the saints paint themselves deeper into a corner than they already are on defense.

might as well look at another SS while your at.

Then again this is the saints so who knows. I have been watching this game play out for years and waiting for the FO to get tired and want to clear the books for a fresh start. aint happened yet.

If the Saints were a big market team, Mickey Loomis would have been fired long ago...

Don't know of any other GM that has made this many poor calls and lost so much money. It's amazing he still has a job.

Agreed, the fact that Loomis still has a job after all these bad decisions is puzzling.

That's strictly scheme related to be fair, every DC we've had since GW has played single high safety and SS in the box.
