Michael Irvin coaching WR's

Help me out guys... I know we all hate Irvin and we should, but he had a show on NFL network that was fascinating.

He was going over route running with some college WR's. It wasn't simply route tree, thats just cartoon drawings on paper.

This was much more technique related. How to lean properly before planting your foot and cutting, which foot to plant where, what hip position to use for maximum cut, which hand and body positions to use when disengaging CB's, how to read the CB's hip angle to best release from him.

It opened my eyes as to how much WR's have to learn just on one "simple" route.

Did anyone else see that segment?

They also talked about how Charles Woodson knew which route a WR was going to run simply by where and how they lined up, or how far apart their feet where, which foot they had in front, which way their head was tilted, how they held their fists...was it closed fist or open hand. All because he studied the movements of every player he faced over and over and over again.

It was amazing.

That's incredible, you have to admire a guy like Woodson who worked on his craft to the stage where he could read a route just like that.

Was that the show Game Changers with Steve Mariucci? He had Michael Irvin talking to Will Fuller, Michael Thomas, Braxton Miller, etc. There's clips here... Game Changers with Steve Mariucci on NFL Network

There was anothe segment about footwork and body poition coming out of cuts that was equally badass.

Couldn't get past the part with Mooch interviewing the candidates - man, I'm gonna miss Marques Colston...

Re: Michael Irvin coaching WR's

I remember Deion was interviewed once and he actually stated that he would Coach up the opposing Wide Receivers he was guarding on how to make it harder for him to diagnose the routes. I can't see how guys like Deion and Charles, aren't Coaching unless they don't want to. I mean just on knowledge alone, I would listed as a DB and even a WR.

Re: Michael Irvin coaching WR's

I love Michael Irvin. Top 5 of all time at his position. High football IQ.

I remember my dad always telling me, "Pay attention to where you're at on the field son. They can only run so many routes/plays."

Mike & Larry Brown were guest speakers at a Junior League football camp I attended a few years back here in the Metroplex. Irvin truly understands the X's & O's of the WR position. Smart guy & super intense .
