When New Orleans snapped up Vonn Bell in the 2016 NFL draft's second round, the Saints didn't realize the former Ohio State safety would allow them to alter their defense on the fly in the face of mounting injuries.

But that's what ended up happening.

After a rash of injuries hit hard at cornerback and linebacker, the Saints put Bell in the starting lineup at free safety and left him there, using his presence to change their defensive vision in the process.

He gets a pass. Being thrown in to the fire is a good thing at most positions. Harper got to mentor the kid which was a good thing for him. He's going to go through some more learning curves but I like what I saw so far from him. He's still got a long way to go though. I do like his tackling.

So far he is best in the slot and in the box. When put in single high safety he looked over whelmed and was out of position way to much. being under 5'10 is not helping in our division either. WR keep getting taller and the saints keep getting shorter.

I agree he gets a pass and has till the rookie contract is up to prove he can handle deep center field duties. So far I see a SS in his game and the saints appear to be loaded at SS yet again.

When I think of Bell I still think of two draft picks......it's not his fault that we spent two draft picks on him though.

Bell was thrown in early after injuries devastated us and we needed the three safety look to just survive on the battle field. And he is only a second round player which means he has skills that could be developed and he showed improvement as the season went on. He got a lot more playing time when Vaccaro started his suspension and has a year under of experience under his belt now.

There were a handful of overthrown passes that he completely gave up on instead of trying to get the interception which kind of irritated me.

Let's hope we see a big jump from him in his second year.

Why? Harper is an extremely smart player and will likely be a very good coach one day.
