Vikings get Cowart for 7th-round draft pick
Associated Press

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. -- The New York Jets traded middle linebacker Sam Cowart to the Minnesota Vikings on Friday for a seventh-round pick in this year's draft.

Cowart saw his playing time diminish in 2004 after a knee injury knocked him out for an extended period and rookie Jonathan Vilma emerged as a standout player. After the season, Cowart asked for a trade when it became clear he wouldn't have much of a role with the Jets.

The move to Minnesota reunites him with defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell, who coached him in Buffalo and New York, along with former Bills teammates Antoine Winfield, Pat Williams, Keith Newman and Ken Irvin.

"Adding Sam Cowart gives us a strong veteran presence and leadership in the middle of our defense," said Vikings coach Mike Tice said. "Sam has played at an elite level throughout his career and we are expecting him to add that type of performance to our defense."

Cowart, entering his eighth season in the NFL, was a second-round pick of Buffalo in 1998 and emerged as a star, notching over 100 tackles in five of his first seven NFL seasons. But he hasn't been the same since an Achilles' tendon injury in 2001.

He played outside linebacker for two years with the Jets before moving back to the middle last season, where he is most comfortable. Cowart was playing well until he sprained his knee in Week 2 against San Diego and missed the next six games. He was hardly used when he got healthy.

The Vikings have been busy upgrading their defense in the offseason, signing linebacker Napoleon Harris, safety Darren Sharper, cornerback Fred Smoot and Williams in the last three weeks. Including Cowart, the five players bring a combined 339 NFL starts, 57 interceptions, 32 sacks and have played in three Pro Bowls.
A freaking 7th round pick!!!!!! But we got Lance Whoopteedoo yesterday. CRAP!!!!!

YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!

Hey remember... Fisher might be the next big time contributor here! He was a second round pick years ago with a degenerative knee problem... there\'s nothing wrong with that! :casstet:

I made a thread about Cowart like a month ago sw, and if I\'m not correct... not many people in these forums are enamored with this guy. I would have loved to have made this trade. When healthy, this guy is a tackling MACHINE.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but a 6th or 7th round pick is the biggest crap shoot I can think of. We can get players like Cowart or Fujita for a pick that low and we are twiddling out thumbs?????? Now THIS is crap.

This is New Orleans Saints Free Agency. They\'re not doing anything different than they\'ve done for the past three or four years. Sign players at positions of minimal to moderate need, often time who don\'t explicitly fill that need, and pass on bigger needs. Fisher is this year\'s Orlando Ruff. Welcome to New Orleans, Whodi.

With Hasbeen the number 1 can be questionable too . Just do not give the man , 2 no. 1 picks or he really gets confused .

interesting list. ya go back at least to 1987 bo jackson (who was #1 overall in \'86), maybe before then with a few names. 36 listed there. let\'s just say 20 years X 32 teams (for simplicity) X 2 rounds (6th-7th)= 1280 picks. 2.8% nameable is a crapshoot.

i\'m pathetic enough i look up N.O. 6th and 7ths...

i\'m waiting for them to sign Lady Luck.

------

hey, the cowart deal is even sweeter...

The Vikings\' trade last week for N.Y. Jets linebacker Sam Cowart, acquired for a 2005 seventh-round draft pick, carried one caveat: If Cowart suffers a training camp injury or does not make the team, the Jets must \"return\" the pick by sending the Vikings their 2006 seventh-round pick.
