Why waste money on another backup when we have Stecker?!!
Rumors say we got Smith at the league minimum for a veteran of his calibre, so that\'s a good deal in itself. I like Stecker, too, but he\'s more of a 3rd-down \"scat back.\" Smith is a big back who will protect the ball and take some of the pounding off Deuce in the short-yardage game. I still think he makes perfect sense as a backup for Deuce (who\'s also a pretty big back himself).

Stecker can be better utilized as a Dave Meggett, Kevin Faulk-type of 3rd-down back, plus he\'s a good kick returner/special teams contributor. Looks like our backfield is set up pretty well now.

In additon, Smith is a proven back who can carry the load if Deuce goes down. Stecker filled in nicely for a couple of games last season, but it\'s doubtful he could carry the load in the long-term.
