Saints: SP needs a streaker and a toy to make Cooks happy
I keep saying this so one more time.
The saints need to bite the bullet and finish the job they have started for once and this looks to be the year to do it. There is a long history of not finishing what they start. The deck is stacked against both Cook and Thomas.
This is the 2 part mix to when SP looked the happiest.
Part 1 - The Streaker
Thomas looks to be that possession WR we need as our #1 to replace Colston.
Cook is utility WR. Always was nothing more than a great toy. In an SP offense that is not a bad thing at all. But assuming he could do what Bush or Sproles did to a defense is a huge failure and needs to be corrected.
Snead is a true #3 type of WR. Out wide or in the slot he will do damage. I see a lot of Lance Moore in the kid.
After that? all bubble types riding on hope wings and prayers.
Enter the missing piece, the streaker. A Mechuem/Henderson type of receiver streaking all over the field to stretch the secondary. I would not say Mechuem or Henderson had elite hands either. They streaked down the field and forced defense to keep the top from coming off. Cook is to good for this role. Sorry he is just too short and to much of an unused weapon to delegate his skill sets as a streaker.
So Add a streaker as a #2WR who can truly take the top off
Draft Early a player with some size and sub 4.5 speed
*Isaiah Ford WR Virginia Tech 6012 190 4.49 #1 Jr?
But a streaker can be had cheaper so later in the draft
Jamari Staples, WR/KR Louisville 6026 195 4.45
Or shop cheap in FA and roll the dice on a player that appears to have the light finally turn on for them.
Justin Hunter WR Buffalo Bills 6'4' / 203 / 4.44
So lets finish this off already now that the top is threatened to be taken off and defenses are stretch so Cook and Williams have room to work.
Part 2 One more Toy.
Imagine if you will a Bush or a Sproles or a PT and your streaker on the field with Cooks. Sweet.. Ever since we lost PT there has not been a true 3rd down back with a multiple skills to help open things up either.
So there is still one thing missing from the famous SP mix.
We need a RB on the field that can strike from any position, at anytime and MUST be accounted for by the ENTIRE defense and not just one player. Just like Bush and Sproles did. Bush or Sproles goes in motion the entire second level of a defense shifted with them.
Bite the bullet and draft this type of back.
*Christian McCaffrey RB/WR/KR Stanford 5115 205 4.48 Jr
Plus you would put some picks in your pocket to boot, with the way this season is ending so far we could be talking a exchange rate. Still think top 15 would not be surprising for him at all.
McCaffrey may not be a featured back but in an SP offense is there really such a thing? What McCaffrey does have is a solid chance of garnering the same type of respect that a Bush or Sproles did.
Bush and Sproles were nothing but toys in this offense really. Neither was the featured back and when we tried it we shortened Bush playing time and injuries became common. We did not do this to Sproles and he work out great. McCaffrey offers this kind of flexibility. Plus he is a better reciever than either one.
McCaffrey might be as good if not better than PT as a 3rd down back. Coming from me that is putting some pressure on the kid. Blitz pick up needs work. Not like Stanford asked him to much of that, That was the area of the game PT excelled at. Actually think PT was one of the best at blitz pick up to have ever played the game. Sure Drew would back me up on that. ok back on topic .....
McCaffrey does not need the rock to have an effect. This is the kind of back this offense has been screaming for. I loved David Johnson and Ezekiel Elliott for their flexibility and the fit in this offense. Then what do you do trade Ingram?
I liked Charles Sims as third down back but he pales to McCaffrey. Nor would either one give you the need to question if you should trade Ingram. So on the plus side of things McCaffrey will probably log more playing time on the field than any other running back in our stable without cutting into other RB playing time much He appears to be the perfect complement. Imagine the roster spots he would open up to address other areas of need do to his all around skill set.
This is the first true multi purpose tool that has come out in a while that only coaches like Sean Payton and Bill Belichick can truly get the most out of.
Now defense are stretch in every direction possible. Opening up the entire second level for Drew and the Boys to pick apart.
This is a pure SP offense.
Close your eyes and remember when SP was all smiles and giggles as he destroyed defenses with this type of mix. That secondary will be Swiss cheese yet again and people would be running all through it all game long.
WE NEED TO FINISH THE MIX. TILL THEN YARDS WILL COME EASY BUT NOT POINTS
Yes I am beating the drum yet again for a trade down for more picks to fix the areas of need on this team. But in this case I see a huge opportunity to finish what we started when we drafted Cook and make this all work.
Round 2 picks are cool and talent is there to fill areas of need
But IMO we need multiple pick packages in any trade involving additional picks in rounds 3, 4 and 5 are crucial in infuse some new talent into this squad. This is shaping up to be a VERY good year in the middle rounds to take those gambles and get some player with solid starter potential cheap. Upgrading depth all across the board.
I call it a win win move
