My Notre Dame coaching rant
I'm not a Notre Dame fan, in fact I'm somewhat of a hater. But I feel that Weis being on the chopping block for not winning at South Bend is totally ludicrous. The Irish football job flat out chews coaches and burns them out. Davie, Willingham or Weis - it doesn't matter. Don Shula himself could come coach the Irish and you'd get the same result!
Notre Dame is a private school with higher/different academic requirements - it is VERY difficult to recruit there. Their successes and failures are magnified to a ridiculous level - partly because of their exclusive weekly TV contract and partly because of their huge tradition. Every team they play is itching to win on national TV. I can't imagine a more stressful head job - and that includes every coaching gig in New York City and large market America. And don't get me started on the schedule ... while the other contenders in college football are off playing their cupcakes, the UAB's, Baylor's and Troy's of the world, Notre Dame is off playing solid or great Pac 10 and Big 12 teams, every single week with no let up in their schedule. And they always have to play Navy, who is a beast. The Irish may overacheive for a season, but the law of averages dictates that schedule will win out over them in the end. I'm not big on pity, but I really do feel bad for Charlie Weis. Thank goodness there is a buyout. Like Davie and Willingham before him, his coaching record at ND isn't a reflection on his coaching ability. It's a product of that environment. Nothing will change until they join a conference (yeah right) or do something to address that schedule. Play (and coach) like a champion today - but it won't matter. See you all again in 5 years when the next the Irish coach gets fired. |

Re: My Notre Dame coaching rant
Notre Dame has not moved their program into the 21st century. The arrogance of not playing in a conference, that exclusive TV deal, the supposed high standards for recruits all adds up to suicide for a coach. They can't recruit on their name anymore, and they haven't adjusted.
Whoever goes there needs to have control of the entire football program, not just coaching. And they are kidding themselves if they think that is still an elite job. As for the schedule, they used to pummel BC, Stanford and Navy every year. Those programs have improved while ND has regressed. |
