"Even the Losers" hope he has a "Room at the Top" and is "Learning to Fly" and isn't "Free Falling"

This then 1980s college aged AmericanGirl liked his music.
I get what you said, how you put that. Cute.
My other favs were Stop Draggging My Heart Around ...his Stevie Nicks songs.

It's too bad about the conflicting news, has to be really difficult on the family. It goes without saying Tom is quite iconic, he would be sorely missed.

Re: Tom Petty died today

The sad news is official now. Tom Petty has passed away.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers songs are touchstones. And not just the hits. I remember when my best friend and I picked up 'Into the Great Wide Open' and listened to it on a car trip. We remarked how each song seemed to get even better. And topping a stellar opening track like "Learning to Fly" - perhaps his career best - is no small feat.

Tom's voice was so sincere and nuanced and enjoyable. Not many people cover TP songs because a lot of the songs don't sound right without Tom singing. And what he could do as a songwriter was second to very few.

Great artist. Also one of the best to learn for a beginning guitarist. You can actually play much of the second guitar as well on an acoustic at the same time the way his songs are arranged. I saw him at the Hollywood Bowl years ago. His lead guitarists is probably one of the best in the world. I remember Tom saying at the concert he was his right hand man.

Mike Campbell is one of the most underrated guitarists in music. He knows what the song needs and doesn't overdo it.

Petty was, is, and will always be a favorite of mine. I admired his song writing at a time when I hated song writers. LOL

I came along in the MTV era, Tom was a big part of that. This is where I became a fan:
