It's not a case of "I've been a fan longer" or "you are a bandwagon fan"...
..it's more like playing the Blues... you cannot play the Blues if you haven't suffered in life. So if someone just started to cheer for the Saints, one didn't suffer through the AB years, or the Ditka years, or know who Carl Smith is, or the fall of the Mora Empire years, or the "the Whiners are in our division" years, or the Bum years, or the baghead years, etc etc etc. one is here just for the happy times. One may be a "fan", and we do appreciate the support and the revenue it creates, and all of the benefits of hordes of people following the team, but one does not bleed black and gold.
Well stated Tobias. I couldn't agree more. I like it that the team is gathering a larger fan base but its a little tough to see people riding on their successes....especially when these are some of the same people who were calling us the AINTS in years past.

Still, I recognize too that some of it is generational. Some younger fans are probably really just seeing the Saints for the fist time this year....with all of the coverage. I remember a co-worker telling me that her teenage daughters heard many of Michael Jacksons popular songs for the FIRST time when they recieved mass repetition during the time of his death a couple months ago. I'm 30 so that sounds crazy to me, but its clear that this team is unlike any that we have rooted for in the past (in New Orleans anyway) so we should accept the new diverse fan base for what it is and enjoy the ride.

Re: Suddenly, everyone is comparing how BIG a fan they are...

many of us have rooted for them since birth, but i really dont care what others think. i know what a superbowl will mean to me and i know what this season has meant to every long time suffering fan so far. its awesome how people i havent talked to or seen in years send me texts out of nowhere with congratulations and just speak about how much fun the saints are to watch.....i try to explain to them that thats how ive felt for the last 20+ years so they understand a little. win or lose, i love this damn team and for once it finally feels like it might be our time.

personally, im doing all i can to contain my elation and not get overly excited, but ill be damned if im not through the roof after every sunday.

I don't particularly go for bandwagon fans.
But the Saints do need a bit more love. They were always ignored and I hated that. So I will take more "fans" if it means the world recognises we exist.

I know a real Saints fan when I see them. Pretenders don't stand a chance.

Me, a big Saints fan? Not really. Only weigh 170 pounds.

So does that mean that most Cowboy fans hate each other?

Speaking of big fans...

I made up this joke a few years back...still waiting for my first laugh...anyway, here goes...

Why is it so windy in the Meadowlands? Because of all the Giant fans there.

Think about it...it will come to you.
