I'll agree with that, Smith had to have something going for him to make it that far and I think anyone that's played a sport can agree that you do eventually reach a level where the game is just too fast for ya', on your way to the top.
I'm lukewarm on the "surrounding talent" debate. You can take that into account, his O/L was suspect, but other QB's have managed with lesser talent around them, #shrug. One thing I did see was that the "experts" felt Smith did not run enough or use his abilities to get himself out of tight spots. IDK, I didn't get to see that much of him, and going by the TD/INT ratio, which to me is the gold standard of QB evaluation, he kinda' came up short.
If he can play, he can play. Hopefully he can get outta' NY and maybe on a team where he can back-up a veteran QB and develop some. I've never been a big fan of drafting a QB and throwing them in the fire right off the bat, ie Joey Harrington, Andre Ware, et ... comes to mind,
